A new and potentially breathtaking way to experience one of the world’s most famous natural wonders has officially landed in the U.S.

Niagara Virtual, dubbed the world’s first location-based flying (LBF) attraction, is now open at the Rainbow Air Tourism Center on the U.S. side of Niagara Falls.

The attraction was developed through a partnership between Frontgrid motion-based immersive experiences and Rainbow Air Helicopter Tours, which has offered real-life helicopter flights over the falls for three decades. This experience combines virtual reality, motion engineering, and gamification.

Niagara Virtual: A first-of-its-kind virtual flight

Niagara Virtual

At Niagara Virtual, guests take flight over a hyper-realistic, interactive recreation of the iconic falls. This all happens while guests control their own movement. Using Frontgrid’s ParadropVR technology and powered by Rize 4 hardware, the experience places participants “under canopy” for a first-person, fully responsive gliding adventure.

Rather than simply watching a film or sitting through a passive simulation, guests actively steer their flight path using intuitive motion controls. Every turn, dive, and ascent is reflected in real time, creating the sensation of free flight.

Tammy Owens, business development director and producer for Frontgrid, described the concept as a new frontier for destination-based entertainment:

“Blending immersive virtual reality, gamification, and motion-based engineering, the experience gives guests a chance to explore Niagara Falls from a whole new perspective — under canopy, in first person, and entirely under their own control.”

Inside the Niagara Virtual experience

The adventure begins with a 360-degree cinematic introduction, filmed from a real helicopter soaring over Niagara Falls. From there, the experience transitions into the VR flight, where participants glide through a detailed 3D landscape reconstructed from satellite data and real-world models.

Guests can race for points, compete for a top spot on the global leaderboard, or just enjoy the scenery. Every visual detail has been carefully crafted, from moving elevators on the Skylon Tower to animated boats, bustling crowds in colorful ponchos, and even a daring barrel tumbling over the edge of the falls.

The attraction features 11 motion pods arranged in a horseshoe shape, echoing the natural curve of the falls. This design allows for high throughput, making it ideal for group experiences.

Frontgrid CEO Matt Wells emphasized how Niagara Virtual signals a shift in how destinations can merge storytelling with technology:

“What we’re seeing here is a perfect example of how attractions can evolve by combining innovative tech with a globally recognized destination. LBF is proving itself to be both a crowd-puller and a profitable format, and Niagara Virtual is a shining example of what’s possible.”

Elevating the Niagara Falls experience

The Rainbow Air Tourism Center, which houses Niagara Virtual, is a newly opened hub that also includes a museum, gift shop, photography studio, and the launch site for Rainbow Air’s real helicopter tours. For Rainbow Air, the addition of the virtual experience isn’t about replacing the real thing; it’s about enhancing it.

Anna Pierce, vice president of Rainbow Air Helicopter Tours, said:

“It is truly magnificent seeing Niagara Falls from the air. You really get a sense of scale and can appreciate the vastness of the volume of water as well as the journey the river takes through the wider landscape, where it comes from and where it goes to.

We’ve been taking visitors to see the falls, from above, in a helicopter for 30 years now, and we love giving people, what they always say is, the highlight of their stay at the Falls.

Now, we are excited to be launching this VR experience as a new, gamified way of exploring and connecting with the land and cityscape.”

Niagara Virtual: The future of immersive tourism?

Frontgrid’s “Location-Based Flying” concept, which blends site-specific storytelling, interactivity, and real-time motion tracking, could soon extend beyond Niagara. The model shows potential for other global landmarks.
