Why so many Orlando attractions appear on a new ‘most dangerous’ list?

Orlando, Fla. — SeaWorld Orlando, Walt Disney World and Universal Studios Florida are among six local destinations appearing in a provocative new ranking of North America’s “most dangerous” tourist attractions.

The ranking comes from Toronto-based insurance marketplace PolicyAdvisor, which analyzed hazard-related language in Tripadvisor reviews of 86 attractions across the United States and Canada.

The results sound alarming, particularly for a region built around family vacations. However, the ranking does not measure accidents, injuries or documented safety records. It measures how frequently Tripadvisor reviewers used hazard-related words—and a closer look at the methodology helps explain why Orlando appears so often.

Study methodology and what the ranking actually means

Despite its provocative wording, the ranking does not measure documented accidents, reported injuries or whether one attraction is safer than another. Toronto-based insurance marketplace PolicyAdvisor searched Tripadvisor reviews for terms associated with physical hazards, environmental risks, crime, security and bodily harm. Those terms included “dangerous,” “unsafe,” “risk,” “injury,” “accident” and “emergency.”

Researchers divided the number of matches by each attraction’s total Tripadvisor review count to calculate hazard-related mentions per 100 reviews. Emotional descriptions such as feeling scared or panicked were excluded, according to the company.

Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada illustrates that limitation. It ranked second overall, but the aquarium has an exhibit named Dangerous Lagoon. The study acknowledges that references to the exhibit may have increased its number of matches.

PolicyAdvisor analyzed 86 “widely reviewed” destinations but did not provide its full selection criteria. Because Orlando contains some of the world’s most visited and most frequently reviewed attractions, several local destinations would be natural candidates for the study’s initial pool.

The concentration of major attractions could help explain why Orlando appears so many times across the complete list.

SeaWorld leads the Orlando subset

SeaWorld Orlando ranked No. 11 overall and first among Orlando attractions, recording 434 hazard-related keyword matches across 34,476 Tripadvisor reviews. That equals 1.26 matches per 100 reviews. “Injury” was reportedly the most frequently identified term.

Walt Disney World Resort followed at No. 13, with 415 matches across 34,627 reviews, or 1.20 per 100. Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California, placed No. 14.

Walt Disney World’s placement requires additional context. Tripadvisor maintains one review page for the entire resort and separate pages for its individual theme parks. The study treated those listings as independent attractions, allowing Walt Disney World Resort to rank No. 13 while Epcot, Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom also appear elsewhere on the list. Because reviews of the resort may discuss experiences inside those parks, the datasets potentially overlap.

Universal Studios Florida ranked No. 20, with 0.82 matches per 100 reviews. Epcot placed No. 31, Disney’s Animal Kingdom ranked No. 32 and Magic Kingdom appeared farther down the complete list.

Orlando safety-related news provides additional context

Theme park safety regularly generates headlines in Central Florida, but those reports should not be treated as evidence supporting this particular ranking. The study does not connect its keyword matches to specific incidents or establish when each review was posted.

Florida’s major theme park operators also submit quarterly reports covering certain ride-related illnesses and injuries. Those reports generally include incidents resulting in hospital stays of at least 24 hours, meaning they are not complete records of every medical response inside the parks. The state reported twelve qualifying incidents across Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando and SeaWorld during the first quarter of 2026.

Other major safety stories, including the 2025 death of a guest after riding Stardust Racers at Universal Epic Universe, are not reflected clearly in this ranking.

Important note: Epic Universe does not appear among the 86 destinations analyzed, demonstrating why the list should not be interpreted as a comprehensive comparison of theme park safety records.

The rest of the ‘most dangerous’ attractions list

White Water Walk in Niagara Falls, Ontario, ranked first, with 3.82 hazard-related mentions per 100 Tripadvisor reviews. The attraction brings visitors close to the Niagara River’s Class 6 whitewater rapids from a boardwalk along the Niagara Gorge.

Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada placed second, followed by Whistler Blackcomb, Columbia Icefield and New Orleans’ French Quarter. The French Quarter was the highest-ranking U.S. destination and the only American entry in the top 10.

Several other destinations appeared farther down the complete ranking:

• Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex ranked No. 25.
• Georgia Aquarium tied at No. 21.
• Niagara SkyWheel ranked No. 22.
• West Edmonton Mall ranked No. 38.
• San Diego Zoo tied at No. 39.
• High Roller in Las Vegas ranked No. 40.

Natural attractions and urban districts were evaluated alongside theme parks, aquariums and observation wheels. Because visitors encounter different kinds of risks at each destination, the results do not provide a like-for-like comparison.

“Unsafe” in a review of an entertainment district could refer to crime, while “dangerous” in a review of a mountain destination could describe weather or terrain.

Canadian and outdoor destinations dominate

Nine of the top 10 destinations are in Canada. Mountain, waterfall and wilderness attractions account for several of the highest positions, including White Water Walk, Whistler Blackcomb, Columbia Icefield and Moraine Lake.

Vancouver alone has four entries in the top 10: Gastown, Vancouver Aquarium, Vancouver Seawall and downtown Vancouver. However, the leading keywords suggest different concerns. “Unsafe” was most common for Gastown and downtown Vancouver, while “accident” led at the Vancouver Seawall and “injury” led at the aquarium.

Theme parks generally placed below those outdoor and urban destinations.

Safety precautions when visiting major attractions

A keyword study cannot determine whether guests should avoid a particular destination. Travelers should instead consult official advisories, attraction rules, weather forecasts and current information from local authorities.

At theme parks, guests should review posted height, health and mobility requirements before entering a queue. Ride warnings may identify concerns involving pregnancy, heart conditions, high blood pressure, motion sickness, back or neck problems and sensitivity to flashing lights.

Florida’s heat and storms create additional considerations. Visitors should drink water throughout the day, take indoor breaks, monitor lightning alerts and follow employee instructions when outdoor attractions close.

Comfortable footwear, hearing protection, sun protection and any necessary medication can also make a long park day more enjoyable.

Most importantly, visitors should distinguish a ranking based on review language from a verified safety assessment. PolicyAdvisor itself states that the results do not establish that the highest-ranking attractions are less safe than those appearing below them.

When it comes to this “dangerous” list, travelers may want to look twice before taking the rankings for a ride.
