Own a piece of Hollywood from the Treasures of Planet Hollywood auction

Planet Hollywood launched in 1991 as a chain of Hollywood-themed restaurants filled with iconic movie memorabilia and backed by major stars, including Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Bruce Willis. By the early 2000s, most of the nearly 100 restaurants had closed, but what happened to all the props and costumes? It turns out they’ve been in storage in Orlando for the last 20 years, but now they’re on the block at the Treasures of Planet Hollywood auction.

Curated by Heritage Auctions, the Treasures of Planet Hollywood takes place March 20-24, 2024, featuring over 1,600 original props and costumes from blockbuster franchises like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Rocky, Back to the Future, and many more.

“Planet Hollywood was acquiring the best quality material imaginable,” says Heritage Auctions Executive Vice President Joe Maddalena. “You’re just seeing what Planet Hollywood was between 1991 and 1997 – the apex of their massive growth – so you’re seeing the best of what they ever had.”

Treasures of Planet Hollywood Costumes

Costumes include Nike running shoes worn by Tom Hanks in “Forrest Gump” (1994), the star-spangled top hat and coat worn by Carl Weathers as Apollo Creed in “Rocky IV” (1985), and the vintage original pink ombre dress worn by Marilyn Monroe as Amanda Dell in “Let’s Make Love” (1960).

Love “Muppets Treasure Island” (1996)? You can own the costume Kermit the Frog wore as Captain Abraham Smollett (Lot #90432). Bidders should note the Kermit puppet is not the original (and is not included).

Treasures of Planet Hollywood Props

Indiana Jones fans definitely won’t want to miss Harrison Ford’s signature bullwhip (Lot #89605) from “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” (1984) and his “wisely-chosen” grail cup (Lot #89617) from “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” (1989).

Other iconic movie props included in the Treasures of Planet Hollywood auction are the Gray’s Sports Almanac (Lot #89629) from “Back to the Future II” (1989) and the original screen-used X-30 blaster (Lot #89579) wielded by Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia in “Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi” (1983).

The shaving cream/dinosaur embryo cryogenic smuggling device (Lot #90094) carried by Wayne Knight as Dennis Nedry in “Jurassic Park” (1993), which includes seven labeled embryo vials reading: TR-1.024 (Tyrannosaurus Rex), VR-1.011 (Velociraptor), BA-1.034 (Brachiosaurus), PR-2.012 (Proceratosaurus), PA-3.011 (possibly Parasaurolophus), PA-2.065 (possibly Parasaurolophus), and HE-1.0135 (possibly Herrasaurus).

“Titanic” Will Go On

According to Maddalena, Planet Hollywood had “most of ‘Titanic’” in their Orlando warehouse.

“We’ve got Leo, we’ve got Kate, we’ve got the wheel for the boat, and we’ve got the famous part of a wall from the end of the movie that he died on,” he told us.

That includes the original costumes worn by Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack Dawson and Kate Winslet as Rose DeWitt Bukater in “Titanic” (1997): Jack’s signature three-piece look with forest green vest (Lot #89977) and Rose’s lavender and pink chiffon “Swim Dress” (Lot #89978), which even shows staining from filming in the water.

Winning bidders will also own costumes worn by Frances Fisher as Ruth DeWill Bukater (Lot #90010) and Billy Zane as Cal Hockley (Lot #89988), plus the ship’s helm wheel (Lot #89991), and last but certainly not least, the  “hero floating wood panel” (Lot #89979) that was the scene of the couple’s tragic goodbye.

Fun Fact: While often referred to as a door, the panel was actually part of the door frame just above the first-class lounge entrance.

Bruce, Arnold, and Sly

Unsurprisingly, many items in the auction come from movies made by Planet Hollywood’s celebrity owners, Willis, Schwarzenegger, and Stallone.

These include costumes worn by Bruce Willis as John McClane (Lot #89504) in “Die Hard with a Vengeance” (1995), by Sylvester Stallone as John J. Rambo (Lot #89348) in “Rambo III” (1988), and by Arnold Schwarzenegger (Lot #84955) as Jack Slater in “Last Action Hero” (1993).

In addition, are Willis’ custom Harley Davidson FXR “Grace” motorcycle (Lot #89025) from “Pulp Fiction” 1994), Stallone’s “Rocky” training gloves (Lot #89339), and Schwarzenegger’s John “The Eraser” Kruger’s badges and IDs (Lot #89465) from “Eraser” (1996).
