PortAventura World announces world’s first ‘Uncharted’ coaster

PortAventura World and Sony Pictures Entertainment have announced that the world’s first dark ride roller coaster based on the box office hit film “Uncharted” will open at Spain’s largest theme park in mid-2023.

Uncharted attraction

Released in February 2022 (and based on the PlayStation video game), “Uncharted” tells the story of Nathan Drake (Tom Holland), who’s recruited by treasure hunter Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) to recover a fortune amassed by Ferdinand Magellan and lost 500 years ago by the House of Moncada. The heist quickly becomes a globe-trotting race to reach the treasure before Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas), who believes his family is the rightful heir.

“The team at PortAventura World has designed a thrilling ride so that fans of the game and film can now step into Nate and Sully’s shoes and go on their own white-knuckle, treasure-hunting race,” said Sony Pictures Entertainment EVP of Global Partnerships and Brand Management and Head of Location Based Entertainment Jeffrey Godsick.

Head of PlayStation Productions Asad Qizilbash added, “Following the huge success of the ‘Uncharted’ movie, we’re excited to see this entertainment franchise further expand into new and exciting spaces.”

With an investment by PortAventura World Parks & Resort of 25 million euros (more than $26M), the project results from a licensing agreement with Sony Pictures in collaboration with Intamin Amusement Rides and Sally Corporation on the attraction.

“We are excited to announce this strategic agreement with a company in the entertainment industry like Sony Pictures,” said PortAventura World EVP and Managing Director David Garcia. “This alliance will allow us to launch, on a global scale, our first dark ride roller coaster. We are convinced that this new attraction with state-of-the-art technology will create great moments and memories for families and friends that come to spend their holidays and free time in our resort.”

The exclusive new attraction will be housed in a 15,750 square foot 52 feet high space in the resort’s Far West zone, taking riders on a quest for “one of the greatest treasures ever found,” with five launches with up to 1-G acceleration.
