Psychosis: New Orlando-area haunt experience turns mental health fears into horror
(Altamonte Springs, Fla.) Being locked inside a box and sent down an 85-foot track into complete darkness would probably be frightening enough. A Petrified Forest is adding another layer.
The independently operated Halloween haunt in Altamonte Springs is introducing “Psychosis,” an immersive experience built around therapy, trauma and manifestations of the mind. It’s one of several new experiences coming to A Petrified Forest for its 19th season, but its unusual premise — and its name — immediately sets it apart.
“Psychosis” will send guests into a pitch-black maze where they are “relentlessly hunted and tormented” by the terrifying traumas that made them, according to promotional material distributed during a recent preview of the 2026 event.
This new experience is part of A Petrified Forest’s 19th season, opening Oct. 2, one of our favorite local haunts for Halloween season in Orlando.

What happens inside “Psychosis”?
The experience begins with a question that A Petrified Forest poses rather bluntly: Would you like to be loaded into an enclosed box and sent down an 85-foot track?Guests who say yes will encounter a character called Dr. Draft, continuing the experience’s therapy-inspired storyline.
The enclosed box travels down the track and deposits guests into encounters with representations of trauma and mental disorders.
“Psychosis” goes beyond the traditional haunted-house format in other ways. A Petrified Forest warns that guests will be touched and may be separated from their group during the experience. Participants must sign a waiver, and a safe word is provided.

The attraction is not recommended for guests younger than 13. Tickets will only be available for purchase at the event, and capacity is limited.
The name “Psychosis” carries some weight
Of course, “psychosis” isn’t simply a horror term. During a media gathering ahead of A Petrified Forest’s opening, representatives explained that different mental disorders will be personified inside the experience, becoming characters that interact with guests as they make their way through it.
The goal, as it was explained during the preview, is to get inside guests’ heads. Performers may touch, grab and move participants while attempting to unsettle them.
Horror has a long history of borrowing imagery and terminology associated with psychiatric illness, from haunted asylums to characters portrayed as dangerous because they are mentally ill. As public conversations around mental health have changed, some entertainment companies and haunted attractions have moved away from those tropes.
And perhaps that discomfort is part of the point.
A Petrified Forest is trying something different
Whatever conversation its theme generates, the physical concept behind “Psychosis” is unusual. A Petrified Forest is best known for outdoor scare trails built through the woods of its Altamonte Springs property. “Psychosis” aims to provide a psychological experience, much different from its traditional trails.
It’s also not the only experiment outside the traditional walk-through format this season. “Dark Road Riders: The Keeper’s Offering” returns the haunt’s interactive escape-ride concept with a new storyline, while the three primary 2026 scare trails are “Drawn to Death,” “The Craving” and “Last Responders.”

“Drawn to Death” is itself playing with another corner of pop culture, transforming familiar childhood cartoon imagery into horror.
For “Psychosis,” that begins before anyone even steps inside. Its title, therapy motif and promise to confront guests with “traumas” make the attraction one of Central Florida’s more provocative Halloween concepts this year.
A Petrified Forest’s 2026 season begins Oct. 2 in Altamonte Springs and runs select nights through Halloween.
