Radio Disney to cease operations in early 2021 after 25 years on air

Disney has announced that Radio Disney will officially cease operations in the first quarter of 2021. This move comes amid ongoing restructuring, and an increased focus on the company’s streaming service, Disney+.

According to the New York Times, this decision will result in the termination of 36 full-time and part-time employees. The completely digital Radio Disney Country stations will also be shutting down as a part of this move as well.

The Disney station originally made its debut back in 1996. It has primarily served as a pop music station for preteens and teenagers, often playing music from Disney Channel original shows and movies. The station also helped launch the music careers for many Disney Channel stars like Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato and the Jonas Brothers.

Disney cited the ongoing health crisis and the ever-evolving media landscape as two major reasons for the decision. This move does not affect Radio Disney Latin America, as that is a separate operation.

  1. So sorry to hear this. Just got an email on Radio Disney Country, but I don’t have a phone with internet access. Lost the Radio Disney Station about 6 or 7 years ago and always hoped it would come back. I have traveled long distances across the state with Disney Radio as my companion and it kept me awake and happy. I’m a 66 yr old woman, but I loved the upbeat music. I consider this a great loss 🙁

  2. you know what. I fell in love with Radio Disney from 2nd grade back in 2002 until 2010. Radio Disney used to be a community where they used to do contests and really cool skits on air and where every one could call in and request a song and had playhouse Disney on it. I am saddened by how today”s kids don”t enjoy that anymore. Everything is all on computers or Cell phones and Media platforms. I grew up in the early 2000”s and to this day I will not embrace what Disney has become in the last decade.
