SeaWorld Orlando is announcing a new phase for one of its attractions, as the park prepares to evolve ‘Expedition Odyssey’ into a fire & ice theme.

Ahead of those changes, SeaWorld invited media for a special preview event that included a “final ride” experience in its current form, along with insights from the park’s design and engineering team. Concept art shows ‘Expedition Odyssey Fire & Ice’ signage at the ride’s entrance.

Expedition Odyssey to begin phased transformation

SeaWorld Orlando states that Expedition Odyssey will begin a phased closure with its current form this week. In about 40 days, a new version called ‘Expedition Odyssey Fire & Ice’ will open.

The updated version will retain the same ride system and vehicle but introduce a completely new film, story, and ride profile. The reimagined attraction will place guests in the role of Arctic researchers, exploring the forces of fire and ice that shape the natural world.

The SeaWorld creative team describes it as, “Same vessel… but an entire new experience.”

“Guests will have the opportunity to really step into a role of being an Arctic researcher.”

Moments like this have become increasingly common across the theme park industry, where attractions are updated or enhanced to extend their lifespan while introducing new storytelling or technology.

What this means for guests

‘Expedition Odyssey’ in its current form begins phased operations tomorrow, Friday, April 10, 2026. This means the current attraction will operate at reduced capacity. It will reopen in 40 days!

Guests can expect from ‘Fire & Ice’:

  • Encounters with Arctic wildlife, including whales
  • Close-up moments with natural phenomena like volcanoes and formations
  • New projection content filmed largely with real-world footage
  • Updated sound design, musical score and environmental effects like wind and mist

SeaWorld Orlando representatives told us, “It’s definitely going to be a little more thrilling… you’ll see the dynamic range of the vehicle.”

Why the sudden change?

Not even a year in, Expedition Odyssey is already getting a second act. With a 40-day transformation starting this weekend, guests have only two days to ride the current version before SeaWorld unveils a more immersive, story-driven ‘Fire and Ice’ experience.

SeaWorld leadership indicated the rapid update is focused on better utilizing the attraction’s full capabilities.

While ‘Expedition Odyssey’ already delivered a strong environmental story, executives felt the ride system, projection technology, and audio capabilities were not being pushed to their full potential.

The new ‘Fire and Ice’ version is designed to take advantage of that technology with a more dynamic ride profile, enhanced soundscape, and a deeper, more cinematic narrative experience.
