Theme parks are revamping roller coasters for summer 2026 – here’s why

As parks ramp up for the busy summer season, many are choosing to revamp existing rides, specifically roller coasters. From Six Flags parks debuting refreshed classics to a Muppet overhaul at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, summer 2026 is shaping up to be a season of coaster reinvention.

This summer marks the debut of a few revamped roller coasters. Plus, this season brings lots of summer vacation plans in Orlando and other cities.

The DareDeviler

Type of coaster: Refurbished classic coaster with new vest-style restraints
When and where: Canada’s Wonderland (a Six Flags park,) opening May 3

Enhanced by track refinements and new trains, The DareDeviler is expected to deliver a smoother, more immersive experience. Improved seating and open, vest‑style restraints provide greater comfort and visibility.

“We’re excited to breathe new life into one of our classic roller coasters,” said Heather Hill, park manager. “With The DareDeviler, we’re elevating the thrill experience with a smoother, more comfortable ride—while AlpenFury continues to deliver the record‑breaking excitement that thrilled guests last season and will again in 2026.”

The DareDeviler represents a common strategy across regional parks. By updating an existing ride with a new identity and refreshed elements, the park can introduce a headline attraction in time for summer without the long timeline required for a new build.

MonteZOOMa: The Forbidden Fortress

Type of coaster: New electromagnetic launch system and upgraded experience
When and where: Debuting summer 2026 at Knott’s Berry Farm

Formerly known as Montezooma’s Revenge, this historic coaster originally opened in 1977. Now it is being reintroduced with a new storyline and updated experience elements. The original ride layout remains, allowing the park to preserve a classic attraction while modernizing the guest experience.

Phantom’s Revenge

Type of coaster: Steel hyper coaster
When and where: April 18 at Kennywood

Kennywood is marking the 25th anniversary of Phantom’s Revenge with a series of upgrades designed to enhance the ride experience without altering its layout. The park has reconfigured the coaster’s trains to alternate between green and purple, refreshed the station, and reintroduced newly recorded versions of the ride’s original audio into the queue.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Type of coaster: Outdoor mine train coaster with family-friendly thrills and scenic terrain-driven drops
When and where: Reopening May 3, 2026 at Magic Kingdom

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad returns with subtle but meaningful updates, including a lowered height requirement from 40 inches to 38 inches, making the iconic coaster accessible to more families. While the ride experience remains largely unchanged, the update reflects ongoing efforts to improve accessibility and guest experience without altering the beloved “wildest ride in the wilderness” identity.

Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets

Type of coaster: Indoor launched coaster receiving a thematic update
When and where: Opening May 26 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Besides the family-friendly fun of Cool Kids’ Summer, there are a few thrills in store. Disney’s approach focuses on evolving the story while keeping the ride system intact. This allows the attraction to remain operationally efficient while feeling refreshed for returning guests. With the loss of Muppet Vision 3D, to make way for the new Monsters Inc. roller coaster, Disney decided to give The Muppets a new home. Aerosmith is out, and The Muppets are in!

Verbolten: Forbidden Turn

Type of coaster: Rethemed launched indoor/outdoor coaster featuring new characters, visual overlays, animatronics, and puppetry while keeping the existing track and ride system
When and where: Opening late spring 2026 at Busch Gardens Williamsburg in Williamsburg, Virginia

Busch Gardens Williamsburg is giving one of its signature coasters a fresh new narrative with Verbolten: Forbidden Turn, set to open in late spring 2026. The updated experience will keep the existing track, ride vehicles, and facilities from Verbolten: Brave the Black Forest, while introducing an all-new story with new characters, visual overlays, animatronics, and puppetry.

At Dollywood in Tennessee, Blazing Fury reopened in 2025 following a refurbishment that preserved the ride while updating its experience.

The park is also planning a groundbreaking new attraction to open soon, showing how parks are balancing refreshed classics with future development.

Why coaster revamps are leading summer 2026

Several factors drive coaster revamps across the industry. Revamping an existing coaster allows parks to reuse infrastructure and reduce overall investment, making it a more cost-efficient option than building from the ground up.

These projects can also be completed on shorter timelines, which helps parks debut updated attractions in time for peak summer attendance. Established rides already have strong guest recognition. New names, refreshed theming, and updated ride experiences can position a familiar coaster as a major seasonal addition.
