Shakes Malt Shoppe offers sweet treats at Universal Orlando

Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort at Universal Orlando offers guests a retro-style theme at this prime value hotel. In December 2022, Shakes Malt Shoppe opened, adding to Cabana Bay Beach Resort’s classic Florida beach resort theme of the 1950s and 60s.

Shakes Malt Shoppe looks like an old-school ice cream parlor. Guests order from the counter, and bar area nearby is the perfect place to sit while enjoying their sweet treats. Of course, this bar area also offers enough charging outlets that the illusion of being in the 1950s and 1960s disappears.

Shakes Malt Shoppe sells three different types of milkshakes. The classic with chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry ice cream costs $8.50. Guests can also select the PB&J or Chocolate, Peanut Butter, and Banana versions for $10. Each shake can be converted to a malt for $1 more. Floats ($8.50) come in three flavors: Coca-Cola, Root Beer, and Creamsicle.

If you want a sundae, this place offers two options: a Classic Sundae consisting of vanilla or chocolate ice cream, whipped cream, and hot fudge or caramel topping for $9 or the Brownie Sundae with similar ingredients plus the brownie for $10.50. If you are looking for a banana split, that costs $13.50 here. Scoops of ice cream make an excellent option for a more petite sweet treat.

Smoothies come in four varieties, each costing $7.50: Morning Berry, Banana Strawberry, Blueberry Banana, and Daily Boost.

During a recent visit to Shakes Malt Shoppe, we ordered a shake. After chatting with the team members who told us any ice cream flavor could be used for a classic shake, we decided to on salty caramel truffle ice cream. While the ice cream brought a high-quality flavor, the whipped cream is just standard Reddi-Whip.

The ice cream was the star and the consistency allowed most of the shake to be consumed with a straw (with the exception of the chocolate truffle pieces of candy). However, they provided a nice addition to the ice cream, and the caramel sauce added to the shake enhanced the experience.

Overall, these shakes deserve consideration (especially at half the cost of a Toothsome Chocolate Emporium and Savory Feast Kitchen milkshake) and bring a classic expected flavor that most guests will enjoy.

The concept of an old-school ice cream counter fits the retro theming of Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach resort very well, and this additional counter-service option adds another reason for families to enjoy at stay at the resort.
