Super Nintendo World details you might’ve missed in Epic Universe reveal

Universal packed so many details into announcing Super Nintendo World, opening 2025 at Epic Universe, you may have missed a few discoveries.

We’re about to get into microscopic details, sure to excite superfans. Check out our previous story for a more macro overview of Super Nintendo World at Universal Epic Universe, the new theme park coming to Universal Orlando Resort.

Let’s take a magnifying glass to the Super Nintendo World videos and literature Universal published and see what we can find.

“Zero Screens” in Mine-Cart Madness … So, Animatronics?!

Screen technology is a hot topic within the theme park industry. Many modern attractions — such as Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure at Epcot, Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts at Universal Studios Florida, etc. — utilize screen technology to immerse the rider beyond a physical setting or fabricated robots. But how many screens are too many?

Mine-Cart Madness, the “track-jumping” roller coaster within Donkey Kong Country at Epic Universe, will contain a shocking number of screens: none.

“There are zero screens,” said Andrew Padua, creative director at Universal Creative, about Mine-Cart Madness. “It is all real show. It is all real thrill.”

It’s beautiful.

This will further differentiate Mine-Cart Madness from its next-door neighbor, Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, which will rely heavily on screens to simulate the action of a race.

Surely Donkey Kong himself will show up in his own ride at some point, right? If DK won’t be on any screen, then reading between the lines we might expect to see the beloved character show up in animatronic form.

With this information in mind, Mine-Cart Madness is shaping up to share several similarities with Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure over at Universal Islands of Adventure. Like Mine-Cart Madness, that attraction is also a family-level roller coaster with no screens, and features an impressive animatronic version of Hagrid, appearing in the likeness of the late Robbie Coltrane.

Height Requirements

Guests must be at least 42 in. tall to ride Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge.

Guests must be at least 36 in. tall to ride Yoshi’s Adventure and Mine-Cart Madness.

Riders must be at least 48 in. tall to experience any of the three rides without a chaperone.

While we’re here … check out those snazzy attraction logos (above).

Single Rider and Express Pass

If the virtual rendering of Donkey Kong Country is to be believed, Mine-Cart Madness will offer a standby line, a single-rider line, and Express Pass access.

Notably, though, just because the infrastructure for all three of these systems may be in place doesn’t mean all three systems will operate right away. Several Universal attractions eased into their single-rider and Express Pass functionalities after their initial grand-opening rush simmered (sometimes years after).

The renderings did not specify whether Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge will implement a single-rider line or Express Pass.

Comparing Promo Artwork

Universal revealed promotional artwork for Mine-Cart Madness at Epic Universe (first image below) similar to a previously shared promo piece for the attraction at Universal Studios Japan (second image below).

Both versions of the artwork are almost the same, but not quite identical. With a wider vantage point, the Japan version shows guests drumming near a rhino and an appearance by Cranky Kong.

Notably, this artwork is also the only evidence in any of Universal’s materials to confirm Dixie Kong will be featured in the Orlando version of the ride alongside Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong.

Power-Up Bands and Mini-Games

“Key Challenges” are Universal’s name for the mini-games guests can play by interacting with various elements throughout Super Nintendo World. Visitors will be able to participate in these activities with or without the purchase of a Power-Up Band. That being said, guests with a Power-Up Band can unlock a final battle, Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown, by completing three Key Challenges.

Guests who purchase a Power-Up Band can choose a design based on their favorite character:

  • Mario
  • Luigi
  • Princess Peach
  • Toad
  • Daisy
  • Yoshi
  • Donkey Kong
  • Diddy Kong

Here’s the full list of the Key Challenges on the Super Mario Land side of Super Nintendo World, with descriptions from Universal:

  • Goomba Crazy Crank: Turn the crank to make the ground spin fast enough to make a Goomba fall backward, winning you a key.
  • Piranha Plant Nap Mishap: Run back and forth, tapping multiple alarm clocks to put the huge piranha plant back to sleep.
  • Koopa Troopa Power Punch: Hit a “pow” Block with perfect timing to send a Koopa shell up the pipe and knock over the Koopa Troopa.
  • Bob-omb Kaboom Room: Gather fragments of a key from around the room and assemble them before the giant Bob-omb goes kaboom.
  • Thwomp Panel Panic: Are you fast enough? Try to flip every tile on the wall to be the same color and win a digital key.

All of these Key Challenges already exist at Universal Studios Japan and Universal Studios Hollywood, with the exception of Bob-omb Kaboom Room, which currently is only in Japan. Its inclusion at Epic Universe will mark the mini-game’s North American debut.

Likewise, the Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong Power-Up Bands are currently only available in Japan, not Hollywood. As such, Epic Universe will be the first Universal park in North America to sell these specific designs of Power-Up Bands, provided Hollywood doesn’t add them to the roster.

As for Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown, Universal didn’t reveal any visuals of this experience for Epic Universe yet, but here’s promo artwork for its Universal Studios Japan counterpart:

Donkey Kong Country Mini-Games

Universal mentionedPower-Up Bands will initiate effects within the Donkey Kong Country area of Epic Universe’s Super Nintendo World, but did not share details.

Within Japan’s Donkey Kong Country, TDR Explorer reported, “guests will be able to participate in interactive mini-games and collect the letters K, O, N, and G – just like in the game!”

Specifically, in Japan’s version of the area, guests will be able to engage in music activities using their Power-Up Band and drums. Based on the newly released Epic Universe concept art (below), Orlando may follow Japan’s lead.

Interactive Meet & Greet Characters

Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Toad will greet guests in-person in Super Mario Land. At the Japan and Hollywood iterations of these character greetings, all but Toad can speak aloud with a limited selection of phrases.

Universal said if guests purchase a Power-Up Band, “meeting these characters offers an enhanced experience” at Epic Universe. At Universal Studios Hollywood, guests with a Power-Up Band can access a special item box when meeting Mario and Luigi.

Unannounced Merchandise and Dining Locations

Universal announced Super Mario Land’s retail locations (1-Up Factory and Mario Motors) and food options (Toadstool Cafe, Yoshi’s Snack Island, and Turbo Boost Treats), but stopped short of formally announcing dining and shopping for Donkey Kong Country.

That being said, the virtual fly-through of the area clearly shows a merchandise stand named Funky’s Fly ‘n’ Buy (named after Funky Kong, and set up in a plane) and another location, perhaps dining-related, named The Bubbly Barrel.

Out and About

The fly-through video shows a cave-like tunnel with crystals serving as the portal from Super Mario Land to Donkey Kong Country.

In between Super Mario Land and Donkey Kong Country is an unspecified alcove (pictured below). Lockers? Coca-Cola Freestyle machine? Any guesses?
