‘Walk the Big One XL’ roller coaster walking tour comes to Blackpool Pleasure Beach
“Walk the Big One XL” guided tour takes over where “Walk the Big One” left off, giving Blackpool Pleasure Beach visitors the chance to climb The Big One steel hyper coaster’s lift hill and explore areas of the ride the public has never been before.
Participants who have the stamina to hike up 420 steps to reach the top of The Big One roller coaster — and have no fear of heights — are in for the experience of a lifetime as Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s ride operations team guides them to the crest of the 235-foot-tall ride for a view like no other.
The tour, which is more in-depth and extensive than its predecessor, also visits two additional stops along the track, for a birds-eye view over the ride, the park, and the seafront.
Guests will also get a look at a maintenance area, for a detailed insight into how the ride works.
Throughout the course of the experience, operations team guides will also tell stories about the ride, impart interesting facts about its operation, and share tales about the time they’ve spent working at the The Big One.
“The original ‘Walk the Big One’ and ‘Walk the Woodie’ events have been hugely successful,” said Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s Director of Operations Andy Hygate, “so we wanted to develop a new experience to build on these, and offer something completely new.”
What can guests expect from the tour? It starts with a meet-and-greet and safety training, after which participants are assisted with their safety gear. A practical training session on a lower portion of the track is then followed by stops along the track, including the highest hill.
“‘Walk the Big One XL’ will take our guests to parts of the ride they will never have been to before, and experience unique views of the ride and surrounding areas. Having tried the walk myself, I can definitely say that it’s something that all fans of Blackpool Pleasure Beach will love to take part in,” Hygate added.
The experience takes approximately 90 minutes from start to finish, and is priced at £150 per person ($203.74 USD). Tours will take place on Friday, April 29; Friday, May 6; and Friday, June 17. Additional dates may be added, depending on demand. Each date features two sessions, at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and availability in each session is limited.
Those taking the tour must wear shoes or boots with a good grip. Harnesses and protective clothing are provided. The minimum age to take part is 12, and all participants must be at least 1.32 meters (4-foot-3-inches) tall.
Additional thrills are coming to the park in 2022, as the Icon double launch roller coaster gets “a new twist.”
