In a sudden surprise move, Disney has re-opened the Walt Disney World Railroad at the Magic Kingdom. We knew this moment was coming soon, but anyone (with park tickets and a park pass reservation to the Magic Kingdom) is now welcome to ride along on this locomotive.
The Walt Disney World Railroad closed Dec. 2018 for work to begin on the Tron Lightcycle / Run roller coaster. In that time, the railroad track had to be slightly re-routed, and a new tunnel was built for the locomotive to pass under the Tron coaster. New narration was also added to this trip around the Magic Kingdom.
You can watch a full ride video of this updated track at the bottom of this article.
Now back after four years of closure, the railroad is finally ready to give us the circle tour of the most Magical Place on Earth.
This new tunnel, that passes under Tron, is mostly dark, but does give some views of the ride. And, new narration accompanies this section of the track.
This aerial view of the park shows why the Walt Disney World Railroad was shut down. The upcoming Tron Lightcycle / Run roller coaster reaches from the outskirts of the Magic Kingdom right into Tomorrowland. The yellow highlighted path is where the railroad track now lays.
This tunnel will allow the real working locomotive to safety pass under this new attraction. Small viewports in portions of the tunnel will also give railroad riders view of the Tron coaster. A well-timed ride could even mean that railroad riders would see the launch come right out of the Tron Lightcycle / Run building as the ride begins.
We are so happy to see that the Walt Disney World Railroad has finally returned with returning views, new narration, and a never-before-seen angle of the Tron Lightcycle / Run roller coaster.
Proprietor of Main Street Operations John Dontrich is also very happy, as he and his family have a long history with the Magic Kingdom railroad and trains in general. Here’s our interview with him, plus a look at the added Tron section. Below that is our full ride through video:
