Atlas9 immersive ’90s movie mystery attraction opening in Kansas City

Atlas9 will take visitors into a 45,000-square-foot fictitious ’90s movie theater, where forgotten movies of that decade have come to life, when the new attraction opens in Kansas City, Kan., on Sept. 25.

This ’90s movie theater experience shifts into a narrative immersive playground with installations, performers, a classic video arcade, and more. Visitors will be in the middle of a mystery with hidden story points to be found. However, beware of the secret government agency that seems to be around.

This come-to-life theater also includes other themed rooms and sections including a 1940s jazz club with a speakeasy, a 240-seat auditorium with projection mapping, and a pizza parlor complete with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology.

“Our team of designers and craftsmen have pushed the boundaries of environmental storytelling to create an interactive experience unlike anything else in the Midwest. It’s a destination people will want to experience again and again,” said Tucker Trotter, CEO of Dimensional Innovations. “Of course, Kansas City is the perfect place for this sort of installation — because it’s a city full of dreamers, builders, and believers in big ideas.”

Immersive experiences like this have grown over the last decade

Global cultural tourism has grown, and immersive art experiences, such as this, are what people are looking for. The combination of physical installations with digital mediums throws the audience into the experience rather than simply watching, or looking at it.

Additionally, Kansas City’s nonprofit arts and culture sector has become part of the national scene, resulting in more than $615 million in economic activity and helping more than 9,000 jobs in the region.

“Atlas9 is a shining example of that spirit and a groundbreaking space brought to life by incredible talent,” said Tyrone Garner, mayor of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kan. “This project not only reflects the vision that defines our city, but also sets the stage for Kansas City, Kan., to become a premier destination for creators, designers, artists, and tourists from across the country and around the world. We’re proud to welcome Atlas9 and the energy it brings to our city’s future.”

This venue has limited-time exhibits with special performances, so there is always something for the locals and returning guests, while still entertaining the road-trippers and tourists.

Creating this experience was a collaborative effort

Atlas9 is introducing this new type of experience to the Midwest, and a lot went into it. It has been developed as a joint venture between Dimensional Innovations (DI) and Homefield. The building’s shell was designed by Perspective Architecture + Design. The Shawnee-based DI Build served as the project’s general contractor and construction manager. There was support from Superior Bowen for amenity construction.

This project blended architectural ingenuity, theatrical set design, and advanced technology integration. The RFID technology is powered by operator Swell Spark and performance collective Quixotic.
