“Back to the Future Part II” returning to theaters is also a timely occasion with Back to the Future Day, celebrated annually by fans on Oct. 21 and signifying the date in the second film when Marty McFly travels through time.

Directed by Robert Zemeckis and produced by Universal Pictures, “Back to the Future Part II” originally debuted in theaters Nov. 22, 1989 (the same week as “The Little Mermaid”!), four years after the original film in the series. The “Part III” finale followed just six months later, debuting in May 1990.

Here’s the official logline of “Part II”:

Picking up precisely where they left off, Marty and Doc (Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd) launch themselves to the year 2015 to fine-tune the future and inadvertently disrupt the space-time continuum. Now, their only chance to fix the present is by going back to 1955 all over again before it is too late.

Even beyond the return of “Part II” to theaters, “Back to the Future” is having a moment. The franchise is featured prominently in “Universal Mega Movie Parade,” a new procession at Universal Studios Florida. That same park spotlights the movie with drones, fireworks, and fountains during the nighttime show “CineSational: A Symphonic Spectacular,” which is currently on hiatus and will return in November 2024.
