Disney makes surprise change to recently opened Animal Kingdom experience
Lake Buena Vista, Fla.— Less than a year after debuting at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, ‘Zootopia: Better Zoogether’ is already receiving an update. Beginning July 29, 2026, the Tree of Life theater show will feature a new scene introducing Mayor Winddancer from “Zootopia 2.”

While Mayor Winddancer isn’t among Zootopia’s best-known characters like Judy Hopps, Nick Wilde, or Flash, the addition gives Disney’s Animal Kingdom show a way of bringing Patrick Warburton’s unmistakable voice to the attraction. The addition demonstrates how Disney continues to evolve experiences alongside its film franchises. It is not uncommon for theme parks and attractions to update experiences within the first year of their operation, but it is still a noteworthy moment.
Interestingly enough, Patrick Warburton filmed a promo for “Zootopia 2” in front of the Tree of Life around the time that the attraction opened, but his character did not have a role in the attraction.
Disney Animation and Imagineering built the show together
Before Zootopia: Better Zoogether debuted, I spoke with Zootopia director and Walt Disney Animation Studios Chief Creative Officer Jared Bush about the collaboration between Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney Imagineering that brought the attraction to life.
Bush said seeing those ideas come to life through Imagineering has been one of the most rewarding parts of the process.
“Collaborating with Imagineering has been one of the true joys,” Bush said. “To see these ideas that people work on for years come to life, and to be able to experience them, is absolutely spectacular.”
Bush said the attraction benefited from constant collaboration between the creative teams, allowing ideas to evolve throughout development. That same collaborative approach now appears to be continuing as Disney introduces a new character to the production less than a year after its opening.
Perhaps during my conversation with Bush before the attraction’s opening, I was unknowingly given a clue to the potential for the experience to evolve.
“What’s unbelievable is the back-and-forth. I think the back-and-forth makes everything better,” Bush said. “In animation and Imagineering, we have very similar brains.”

Mayor Winddancer joins the show
Mayor Winddancer is one of the new characters from “Zootopia 2.” Voiced by Patrick Warburton, the character is a former actor turned mayor. Many Disney fans associate Warburton with his role at Soarin’ at Epcot as well as Kronk in “The Emperor’s New Groove.”
Fittingly enough this new scene is at the very start of the show just as guests are sitting down inside the theater. Mayor Winddancer makes a speech to kick off the celebration.

This quick scene extends the show’s approximately nine-minute runtime by a few seconds. Attractions Magazine will experience the updated show after the scene debuts and update this story with additional details.
You can see some clips of this new addition in this post from Walt Disney Imagineering.
