Photos and Video: ‘Hercules’ musical now open in Hamburg, Germany

Broadway-Style “Hercules” Musical

“Hercules” in Germany? Yes, indeed.

The production — a collaboration between Stage Entertainment and Disney Theatrical — tells Hercules’ journey from zero to hero with songs (old and new) by Disney Legend Alan Menken and David Zippel, the same duo who wrote the tunes for the animated movie.

Puppetry and special effects bring the story’s myths and monsters to the stage.

Previous iterations of a “Hercules” musical performed in 2019 at the Public Theater’s Delacorte Theater in New York City’s Central Park and in 2023 at Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, N.J.

Cast & Crew of the “Hercules” Musical

The Hamburg production is directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, who previously served in both of those roles for the Broadway productions of “The Drowsy Chaperone,” “Elf,” “Aladdin,” “Something Rotten!,” “Tuck Everlasting,” “Mean Girls,” “The Prom,” and “Some Like It Hot.”

“Hercules” stars Benét Monteiro as the titular hero, Mae Ann Jorolan as Meg, and Uzoh, Chasity Crisp, Shekinah Mcfarlane, Leslie Beehann, and Venolia Manale as the Muses.

Walt Disney Animation Studios originally released “Hercules” in 1997. The film was directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, who had also helmed “The Little Mermaid” and “Aladdin” by that point. The pair would go on to also direct “Treasure Planet,” “The Princess and the Frog,” and “Moana.”

Herc is on a Roll

Over the years in Disney theme parks and onboard Disney cruise ships, “Hercules” has been featured as a satirical musical on the Disney Wonder, a parade at Disney-MGM Studios (now Disney’s Hollywood Studios), and as inspiration for villains-themed after-hours events hosted by Hades at Hollywood Studios and Magic Kingdom Park.

Just last week, Disney Cruise Line revealed Hercules and Hades are part of the backstory for the upcoming Disney Destiny ship.
