Horror Make-Up Show revamp keeps a piece of Universal Studios Florida history alive
Universal Orlando Resort has announced that Horror Make-Up Show at Universal Studios Florida will temporarily close beginning May 12, 2026, for a reimagined version of the attraction set to debut later this year.

According to Universal, the updated experience will feature “a mix of classic and modern horror properties” along with “shockingly fun surprises,” while still maintaining the comedic and irreverent tone longtime fans know and love.
For many guests, the announcement is significant because ‘Horror Make-Up Show’ represents one of the last remaining attractions still closely tied to Universal Studios Florida’s original identity.
A surviving piece of Universal Studios Florida’s original concept
When Universal Studios Florida opened in 1990, the park focused heavily on giving guests a behind-the-scenes look at movie production and practical filmmaking effects.
While many opening-era attractions eventually closed or transformed into newer franchise-based experiences, ‘Horror Make-Up Show’ endured by continuing to offer something distinctly different from most modern theme park attractions.

A mix of horror, comedy, and live performance
Rather than relying on ride systems or large screens (like so many Universal Orlando rides,) ‘Horror Make-Up Show’ combines live actors, audience participation, practical effects demonstrations, and improvisational comedy.
The attraction’s fast-paced humor and intentionally over-the-top horror effects helped it build a cult following over the years, especially among longtime Universal fans who appreciate the park’s original “studio tour” roots. The show has also remained one of the few attractions at Universal Orlando built primarily around live entertainment and practical effects rather than immersive ride technology.

What Universal has shared about the revamp so far
Universal has not yet revealed which horror properties will appear in the updated version of the show, but the company confirmed the experience will blend both classic and modern horror franchises.
The comedic tone will remain
Universal specifically stated that the reimagined attraction will stay true to the “comedic and irreverent spirit” guests expect from ‘Horror Make-Up Show.’
For many fans, it can be reassuring to know Universal will modernize the experience while preserving many of the elements that helped the attraction survive decades of change at Universal Studios Florida.
