Breaking! Mythos survived nearly every era of Universal Orlando — until now

Universal Orlando Resort has confirmed that Mythos Restaurant at Universal Islands of Adventure will close in 2027 as part of the phased redevelopment of Lost Continent into a new themed area.

For many theme park fans, the announcement marks a big loss. Mythos was more than just a place to eat inside Islands of Adventure. Over the years, it became one of the most enduring symbols of the park’s original identity — surviving massive expansions and nearly every major era of Universal Orlando’s modern evolution.

Its eventual closure now marks the end of one of the resort’s longest-running opening-day experiences.

Mythos: the basics

When Islands of Adventure debuted in 1999, Universal designed the park around highly themed “islands” built from mythology, comic books, cartoons, and adventure stories.

Located inside Lost Continent, Mythos stood out immediately because of its elaborate design. The restaurant’s cavernous interior, waterfalls, rock formations, and fantasy-inspired architecture helped establish it as one of the most immersive dining locations ever built inside a theme park.

The restaurant became a destination of its own

Unlike many theme park restaurants designed mainly for convenience, Mythos quickly developed a reputation as an attraction-level experience. It regularly appeared on “best theme park restaurant” lists and became a must-do stop for repeat Universal fans, even as the surrounding Lost Continent area gradually became less central to the park’s identity.

For some guests, Mythos represented a version of Universal Creative that focused heavily on original environments and atmospheric storytelling rather than recognizable film franchises.

Mythos survived massive changes at Universal Orlando

Over the last two decades, Universal Orlando has transformed dramatically.

The arrival of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter permanently reshaped Islands of Adventure and turned the resort into a global destination. Jurassic Park evolved into Jurassic World. New attractions, intellectual property, and thrill rides increasingly became the focus of the parks.

Yet Mythos remained.

Lost Continent changed around it

Lost Continent slowly became one of the park’s quieter areas after large portions of the land were absorbed into The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Then the closure of ‘Poseidon’s Fury‘ gave fans the sign that Lost Continent’s fate had been sealed.

While other opening-era experiences disappeared or transformed over time, Mythos continued operating as one of the last major remnants of the park’s original mythology-driven vision. That longevity helped foster an emotional attachment among longtime Universal fans.

The closure signals a new era for Islands of Adventure

Universal has not yet announced what new themed area will replace Lost Continent, but the company confirmed that venues and experiences within the land will close in phases over the coming months and years, with Mythos closing in 2027.

The announcement comes as Universal Orlando continues its largest expansion period ever, following the debut of Epic Universe and several additional projects across the resort.

Thunder Falls Terrace will become the park’s new signature restaurant

At the same time Universal announced Mythos’ closure, the company also revealed that Thunder Falls Terrace near Jurassic Park River Adventure will close this summer and reopen in 2027 as a new signature full-service restaurant for Islands of Adventure.

The park’s flagship dining experience will exist in the future, but not as Mythos and will be shifted closer to some of the park’s busiest and most recognizable attractions.

For many fans, however, Mythos represented something harder to replace: a surviving piece of Islands of Adventure’s original creative identity.
