Iconic Knott’s neon K moved to the Museum of Neon Art

The giant Knott’s neon K that was perched atop the Sky Tower at the Buena Park, Calif. theme park will soon be on display at the Museum of Neon Art in Glendale, Calif.

A beloved Orange County landmark for 44 years, the 20-foot-tall yellow K held its place of honor at the top of the 200-foot-tall tower (and its Sky Jump parachute thrill ride) from 1976, when the Roaring 20s airfield area opened until 2020 when it was replaced by a new K-shaped LED screen to mark Knott’s Berry Farm’s 100th anniversary.

The 5,000-pound double-sided capital K with serifs and a sweeping curve was animated to fill with yellow neon row by row. With the arrival of the new K-shaped LED screen, Knott’s neon K will begin its second life at the Museum of Neon Art (MONA) – the tallest neon sign to enter MONA’s collection to date.

“My earliest memories of neon signs can be traced to the shops and attractions of Knott’s Roaring 20’s-themed landscape,” said neon and Knott’s Berry Farm historian Eric Lynxwiler. “I can name almost every neon sign in the colorful Roaring 20s, but today we only have this one enormous survivor, the neon K from atop the Sky Tower […] and I’m overjoyed that the Museum of Neon Art can be a caretaker for this icon.”

Following the removal of the Movieland Wax Museum neon spectacular in 2018 (portions of which were saved by MONA), Knott’s neon K was the last remaining Orange County neon spectacular.

Theme park fans should note that the museum’s collection also includes the replica Flynn’s Arcade sign made by Disney to promote “Tron Legacy” (2010) at San Diego Comic-Con (and was later displayed at Disney California Adventure), as well as the original 1929 neon Brown Derby sign from the famous Hollywood restaurant that was recreated for The Hollywood Brown Derby at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando.

An official unveiling date and details about how the museum will display Knott’s neon K have yet to be announced. Click here for more information, or follow MONA on Instagram.
