(Interview) How Big Thunder Mountain Railroad adds new magic and honors its lore

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is set to return with more than refreshed scenery, as Disney shared new details about the Magic Kingdom favorite’s refurbishment. Attractions Magazine participated in a group interview with a member of Walt Disney Imagineering to learn how “new magic” is being brought to the attraction while honoring its backstory.

During a Walt Disney Imagineering group interview, Attractions Magazine spoke with Dan Flynn, executive show management, Walt Disney Imagineering, for new behind-the-scenes insight into the ongoing refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom. During the media session, Disney leaders shared details on enhancements coming to the iconic attraction.

Keeping what works — and making it better

When asked how Imagineering decides what to change and what to preserve on a classic attraction, Flynn offered a simple approach.

“If something works, you keep it. You want to enhance it.”

As Flynn shared more, it seemed that mindset defines the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad refurbishment. Instead of dramatic changes, guests can expect a refreshed version of the attraction that builds on decades of history.

Returning riders may especially notice some elements have faded over time, Flynn hinted.

Flynn also briefly indicated that guests may notice a smoother ride experience following the refurbishment.Flynn also briefly indicated that guests may notice a smoother ride experience following the refurbishment.

Q: What surprises can guests expect?
Dan Flynn: Guests will notice things that were not as prevalent anymore, and details that could be brought back better and brighter.

That suggests longtime fans may discover restored effects, refreshed scenery, and familiar moments presented with renewed energy.

Honoring the mountain’s story

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is known not only for its thrills but also for its layered backstory. Flynn said story authenticity played an important role in the refurbishment process.

He shared that he personally asked to be part of the project and then immersed himself in the attraction’s established lore, researching gold history and real mining operations to ensure updates felt authentic to the world of Big Thunder.

Flynn recapped that the story dates back to America’s first major gold rush, when entrepreneur Barnabas T. Bullion sought to extract as much wealth as possible from the mountain.

But local legends warned of protective forces within the mountain. As miners dug deeper, strange events began: ominous rumbles, unsettling signs, and growing danger.

That mythology continues to shape the ride experience today.

Bigger atmosphere inside the caves

Some of the most notable enhancements appear to center on the attraction’s cavern scenes.

Q: Why enhance Rainbow Caverns?
Dan Flynn: It has always been there.

Flynn noted that Rainbow Caverns remains especially beloved, making it a natural candidate for enhancement rather than removal.

Elsewhere in the ride, cave scenes are being amplified with stronger atmosphere and suspense. Flynn described more menacing rumbles and a foreboding sense of what is to come as guests move through the mountain.

Another fan-favorite detail is also staying put.

Q: What about the goat?
Dan Flynn: Our goat is our classic goat, who is still there.

And for those following online speculation about the attraction’s bat scene, Flynn confirmed a significant increase in scale, with more than 2,000 bats added to one cave sequence to create a more ominous environment.

Below is a video from Walt Disney Imagineering’s Instagram account that shows some of the bat elements.

Dan Flynn repeatedly framed the mountain as a character:

  • pushes riders out
  • ominous warnings
  • unwelcome visitors
  • protective forces fighting back

Refreshing the queue

The refurbishment extends beyond the ride track itself. When asked whether the queue would receive updates, Flynn said all of the queue elements have been refreshed. That includes continued attention to the attraction’s established mining-company lore introduced in prior enhancements.

“We refreshed all the elements… especially the queue… and expanded upon the lore into the mountain.”

Disney shared a video earlier this week that showed the following elements in the queue.

  • Donkey hoof prints stamped into the ground
  • Wagon wheel tracks in pathways
  • Mining equipment scattered through the queue
  • Weathered crates, barrels, tools, and ore containers
  • Rusting machinery/extraction gear
  • Signage for the mining company

Unique to Walt Disney World

When asked whether the refreshed attraction would become more similar to the version at Disneyland Park, Flynn made clear that this mountain remains its own experience.

“Our mountain and lore is unique to Walt Disney World.”

That statement should reassure fans who appreciate the distinct identity of Florida’s version of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. But, Flynn also shared that guests will now encounter a shimmering cave filled with the long-sought mother lode of gold near the attraction’s finale.

A personal connection to the project

For Flynn, the refurbishment is more than another assignment. He shared that his wife worked as an operator and lead at the attraction in the 1980s, and that several friendships and connections formed there ultimately led people into Imagineering careers.

When the opportunity arose to work on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Flynn said it felt obvious he needed to be part of it. As a former Disney cast member myself, I get it. Each of us has a special connection to the places we worked. It made me smile to hear about the Flynn family connection.

Looking ahead

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopens officially on May 3, 22026 with a new lower height requirement. The interview made one thing clear: Big Thunder Mountain Railroad’s future is rooted firmly in its past.

Guests can expect a version of the classic attraction that respects its lore, restores beloved details, and adds fresh surprises for a new generation of riders.
