Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, the first-ever ride starring Mickey and Minnie Mouse, is replacing the Great Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at the Walt Disney World Resort.
Details for Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway were unveiled during the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts presentation at D23 Expo 2017. On Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, riders will “step through the movie screen,” according to Imagineer Kevin Rafferty, for a “zippy zany out-of-control adventure” inside the wacky and unpredictable world of a Mickey Mouse Cartoon Short. The ride features “mind-boggling transformations,” and Rafferty says “you are not going to believe what you see.”
The attraction is inspired by the Mickey Shorts that you can see on the Disney Channel, and the art director, composer, and supervising director of the shorts at Disney Television Animation are working on the attraction, which will begin with the premier of a brand-new Mickey cartoon short.
Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will feature a new story and a new “loveable singable” attraction theme song as well as a new experience Disney is dubbing “2 1/2 D.” Rafferty said teams are inventing new technologies that turn the flat world of a colorful cartoon short into a “dimensional display of amazingness,” using advanced projections to bring the “flat not-flat” world of the cartoons to life without the need for 3-D glasses.
“This is one of the boldest…most impossible things I’ve ever worked on in almost 40 years of being an Imagineer. And you know what? That’s what I love about it. Well, that, and Mickey,” Kevin said. “This is not going to be a small attraction, it’s going to be game-changing.”
August 13, 2017 will be the final day of operation for The Great Movie Ride presented by Turner Classic Movies. However, the Chinese Theater facade is expected to remain. There is no announced opening date for the new ride.
