Peacock adding two unscripted design series for families

Peacock streaming service is introducing two new original unscripted series. Both shows — “Backyard Blowout” and “Create the Escape” — will focus on DIY design, creation, and home renovations and marks Peacock’s first venture into kids and family unscripted programming.

“Peacock recognizes that there’s a unique and untapped opportunity in streaming to provide kids and families fun and original unscripted content that they can watch together, particularly in the DIY design and home renovation space,” said Jenny Groom, executive vice president of unscripted content for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “The exciting additions of fresh, innovative, and imaginative shows like ‘Backyard Blowout’ and ‘Create the Escape’ are just the beginning of our commitment to expanding the kids and family content offering on Peacock.”

“Backyard Blowout”

A new renovation series from Departure Films (“Get Out of My Room,” “Flip This House”), “Backyard Blowout” gives kids the power to take charge of their backyard and create an awesome new space for their entire family.

What makes this show unique is the design is 100% up to the kids to create a backyard makeover they’ve only dreamed about – from multi-level treehouses to zip lines, pirates ship splash pads to challenging ropes courses, and even a pet palace for the family dog. In the process, they have to balance the fun of pushing their imaginations to the max with the responsibility of keeping track of their family’s needs.

“Kids love design and transformation, and ‘Backyard Blowout’ is a fun and natural way for them to explore their creativity and give back to the whole family,” said Matt Levine, head of development, Departure Films.

“Backyard Blowout” will be hosted by Jonathan Kidder (“Waffles & Mochi”) and design expert Sana Garner.

“Create the Escape

Escape rooms allow players of all ages to work together to solve a series of puzzles while experiencing a little adventure along the way. “Create the Escape” allows kids to bring their ideas to life as they create, design, and build their very own escape rooms with the help of design professionals. Once the kids bring their escape room dreams to life, they’ll challenge their parents, family members, or other guests to escape in an allotted time.

“From a pirate ship and a spy plane to haunted high school, the sets on ‘Create the Escape’ are amazing, and they all come from the ideas kids dream up,” said Max Weissman, president of Departure Films.

“Create the Escape” will be hosted by Angela Jaymes (Universal Kids) with the assistance of design experts Hillary Manning (Universal Kids) and Russell Ray Silva (AfterbuzzTV).

“Universal Kids is incredibly excited to celebrate kids’ endless imaginations and talents with these new projects,” said Karen Miller, senior vice president of content for Universal Kids. “These shows will inspire families to share real-life experiences together.”

“Backyard Blowout” and “Create the Escape” will be coming soon to Peacock.
