Plot synopsis

In “Come Out and Play,” viewers meet Smiley, a shadowy figure on the hunt for a new friend — and a new face. Blending arthouse horror with spine-tingling suspense, the film immerses audiences in the same atmosphere of dread, scares, and surprises that come alive nightly inside the parks’ haunted mazes, scare zones, and thrill rides in the dark.

Mini-review

We got to see “Come Out and Play” ahead of its Oct. 1 debut, and we think fans of haunt attractions will appreciate the opportunity to see a space like this utilized in the medium of film.

The story takes place in an unspecified amusement park itself, so the Six Flags midways and haunt attractions’ sets aren’t trying to pass for anything other than what they are. That being said, Smiley is a very real monster among the just-pretend “scareactors” of the park. In this way, “Come Out and Play” is a bit like the old “Kingdom Keepers” Disney novels.

While not everything in the story makes sense (Why would a theme park guest walk into the woods to use the restroom?), there’s no reason to pick this apart. It’s a free short film, created by a theme park company trying something new. That should be applauded.

How to watch

“Come Out and Play” is available to watch for free on YouTube and Six Flags’ social media channels:

Six Flags parks are currently in the middle of Halloween season, hosting after-dark haunts such as Scarowinds at Carowinds, HalloWeekends at Cedar Point, and Fright Fest at various parks. Four parks debuted a 20-minute “The Conjuring” attraction this year.
