Tesla’s Robotaxi arrives in Orlando, but there’s a catch for visitors
A trip to Walt Disney World or Universal Orlando Resort could one day include a ride in a driverless Tesla. The automaker has expanded its Robotaxi service to Orlando as part of its latest rollout, bringing autonomous ride-hailing to one of the world’s busiest tourism destinations. For now, however, there’s a major catch: the service remains limited to a select area and is not yet in the theme park or tourist areas.
From hotel shuttles to rideshare apps, getting around Orlando has never offered more options. Now, Tesla is adding something entirely new. The company’s Robotaxi service has expanded to Orlando, putting driverless vehicles on Central Florida roads— but theme park guests hoping to ride one during their next Disney or Universal vacation may have to wait.
The expansion puts Orlando alongside cities including Austin, Dallas, Houston, and Miami, where Tesla has already introduced Robotaxi service. Tesla says the Orlando rollout remains limited as it continues safety testing and gradually expands the coverage area and availability. Tesla also launched in Tampa today, but that coverage area doesn’t include Busch Gardens yet.
What is Tesla Robotaxi?
Tesla Robotaxi is the automaker’s autonomous ride-hailing service that allows passengers to request rides in self-driving Tesla vehicles through a dedicated app. Unlike traditional rideshare services, there is no human driver behind the wheel. The current fleet primarily uses Tesla Model Y vehicles equipped with the company’s camera-based “Tesla Vision” system and artificial intelligence software, with the purpose-built Cybercab expected to join the fleet in the future. Some Cybercabs have been seen around Orlando, but they are still in the testing phase and not available for rideshares yet.

Tesla has not announced service to Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Orlando Resort, SeaWorld Orlando, or Orlando International Airport, meaning most vacationers are unlikely to encounter a Robotaxi during their next trip. As with previous launches, the company is expected to expand service areas over time as testing continues.
There is, however, already a driverless taxi service that operates around Orlando’s attractions area: Waymo.
How does Tesla compare with Waymo?
Alphabet/Google-owned Waymo has also announced plans to expand its driverless ride-hailing service in Florida, as it continues growing beyond its established markets.
Waymo already operates a commercial autonomous ride-hailing service that serves much of the International Drive tourism corridor, including SeaWorld Orlando, ICON Park, and other attractions along I-4. However, its service area does not currently extend to Walt Disney World Resort or Orlando International Airport. Although Universal Orlando is in their coverage area, they don’t currently drop off or pick up at Universal CityWalk or Epic Universe.
The biggest difference is how the companies approach self-driving technology: Tesla relies primarily on cameras and AI-powered software, while Waymo combines cameras with lidar sensors and other technologies. Waymo has spent years building its commercial robotaxi network, while Tesla’s Orlando launch represents a much earlier phase of its nationwide expansion.

Currently, Tesla car owners who own or rent Tesla’s self-driving software can have their cars drive them anywhere, with supervision by someone in the driver’s seat.
