The best places for a picnic in O’ahu Hawaii, according to a local

There’s no doubt Hawaii is one of the most picturesque travel destinations in the world, but, on an island popular with tourists, where do locals go and relax? We reached out to an Ewa Beach couple for their best picnic spots on Oahu.

A state surrounded by beaches and water, Hawaii offers plenty of places to picnic.

Pipeline Beach

Known as the “surfer’s beach,” Pipeline is one of the most famous surf locations in the entire world. Even if you aren’t the surfing type, you can enjoy a picnic on the beach while watching some of the world’s best athletes take on the Pacific Ocean.

Ka Iwi Scenic Shoreline

If you’re looking for a sunrise picnic, this is the place. This location requires a hike, but unlike other areas of Hawaii, the trail is paved and is considered an easy route. This hike doesn’t offer any shade, so on hotter days you may want to aim for earlier arrival times. In exchange for your trek to the scenic point, you can enjoy views like this with an early morning Hawaii picnic.

Kapiolani Park Beach

Yes, this is a touristy beach location, but many tourist spots are popular because they’re some of the world’s most incredible locations. Ample restrooms, plenty of shade, tables, and postcard-worthy views all await you for your next Hawaii picnic.

Hanauma Bay Ridge Hike

This nature hike to the Hanauma Bay Ridge provides great ocean views. On clear days, you may even be able to see humpback whales on their migratory paths. This walk also has nice spots to stop and enjoy a leisurely meal.

Waimea Bay Beach Park

Waimea Bay is a locals’ area to enjoy water activities, a Hawaii picnic, snorkeling, and local shops. A big perk of visiting Hawaii is you can start with a beach sunrise and end with a beach sunset.

Puʻuloa Beach Park

This location is rarely recommended to non-locals. Smaller crowds are a plus, as is the close vicinity to the Air Force Base if you like the idea of potentially seeing large military aircraft overhead. This isn’t the quietest place to visit, but it does offer a look at Hawaii that isn’t dominated by skyscrapers.

Perfect Hawaii Picnic Wine

Along with finding places to enjoy a relaxing picnic, you can’t forget a good snack or drink. With the health-conscious lifestyle in Hawaii, it was the perfect opportunity for our Ewa Beach couple to enjoy a healthy wine on their picnic. We are not sponsored to say this, but the couple did try out Lifevine Wines, a zero-sugar wine offering featuring an ingredient label (even though it isn’t required for wines). For Hawaiians, or anyone focused on health, this could be important to you.

Due note, consuming alcohol in open containers is not allowed in some areas of Hawaii, so it’s always best to drink responsibly and check local laws.
