Cypress Gardens extending its seasonal schedule through November

Cypress Gardens plans to continue with its seasonal operating schedule through November. This past September the Gardens decided to open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays due to lack of attendance during this time of year. Fridays in September were known as “$5 Fridays” and drew crowds they may not have normally visited the park otherwise. The entertainment schedule on Saturdays and Sunday included Asphalt Assault (a BMX and biking demonstration with bands), HT3 Bass fishing Tournament, Hot Water Jet Ski competition, Victoria Huggins in concert and Girl Scout Journeys.

The last Friday of September was a very successful one as the park welcomed more than 8,000 visitors taking advantage of $5 Fridays. This was an improvement from the 200 or so visitors per day last year in September. The Gardens actually saw one of its most profitable months last month.

“We realize that times are tough for people but we would like to make family fun affordable while keeping Cypress Gardens profitable, ensuring it will be around for generations to enjoy,” stated Rob Harper, co-owner of Cypress Gardens.

To continue with affordable family fun, Cypress Gardens is introducing a special promotion for two upcoming Fridays, Oct. 10 and 17. The first 10,000 visitors will receive admission into the park for just $10. Cypress Gardens has also adjusted the schedule so that Splash Island will be open Friday through Sunday in October. The world famous ski show that is performed on Saturdays and Sundays, will also be added to two Fridays in October, the 17th and 24th. Country singer Billy Currington will be in concert at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 24.

Cypress Gardens is located in Winter Haven, about an hour from Orlando. Regular admission is $39.95, plus tax for ages 10 to 59. Child admission is $34.95 plus tax for ages 3 to 9 and senior admission is $34.95, plus tax for 60 and over. For more event details visit www.cypressgardens.com.

Disney's New Year's Eve fireworks and festivities announced

dsc08654.jpg

A kaleidoscope of colors and elaborate light displays will decorate the skies on the final night of 2008 at Walt Disney World. Dazzling fireworks showers, live entertainment and extended park hours on Dec. 31 make it a very popular spot to ring in the new year. Expect large crowds and arrive to your preferred park early as some of them may reach capacity.

Epcot
At Epcot, a special version of “IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth” will be presented at 7:40 p.m. and 11:50 p.m. The park’s Dec. 31 operating hours will be 8 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Disney’s Hollywood Studios will host “Fantasmic!” at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Revelers can “rock on” with live performances by in-park band “Mulch, Sweat and Shears,” plus a DJ spinning tunes at Mickey’s Sorcerer’s Hat. A special “Lights, Camera, Happy New Year” fireworks show brings in the new year at 11:50 p.m. The park will be open from 9 a.m. until midnight on Dec. 31.

Magic Kingdom
Late-nighters can party at the Magic Kingdom until the wee hours with parades and fireworks galore. The park is aglow with “Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade” at noon and 3 p.m., followed by the “SpectroMagic” parade at 7 and 10:30 p.m. “Holiday Wishes” fireworks takes place at 8:30 p.m., capped with the grand finale “Fantasy in the Sky” fireworks at 11:50 p.m. On Dec. 31, the park will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Spooktacular photo update from SeaWorld

dsc09251.jpg

Yesterday was the first day of SeaWorld’s Halloween Spooktacular and I made the trip with my trick-or-treating son and wife. You’ll find all of the Halloween related pictures in our Gallery Here, but here are a few non-holiday pictures.

dsc09196.jpg
You can finally see more than just a dirt lot as some metal is starting to rise for the new Manta Coaster.

dsc09220.jpg
I knew Wheel of Fortune was going to be taping four weeks of shows at SeaWorld on Dec. 11, 12, 14 and 15, but I didn’t realize they had to construct more room for them.

dsc09261.jpg
It may be because we usually visit later in the afternoon, but this is the first time I’ve seen this water fountain show with music. The waters danced at regular intervals.

dsc09255.jpg
It’s also the first time I’ve had the chance to see this “tall” band perform. Here they’re grooving in Shamu’s Happy Harbor.

Don’t forget to check out all of SeaWorld’s Halloween Spooktacular photos.

Very cute picture (and video) from Discovery Cove

dc-baby-anteater.jpg

The first baby lesser anteater born at Discovery Cove receives her daily check-up by animal trainer Higinio Covarrubias at the park.

Born Tuesday, Sept. 16, via c-section, the baby needed critical care from the training staff as the mom showed little interest in her newborn. Trainers provided supplemental bottle feedings (every four hours) while successfully introducing baby to mom.

Anteaters are one of the many animals guests can interact with at the all-inclusive Discovery Cove.

Busch Gardens Howl-O-Scream 9 2008 Review, Pictures, and Video

howloscream.jpg

While we tend to focus on Orlando happenings (after all, we are Orlando Attractions Magazine), there are some events that we just can’t pass up covering. One such event is Howl-O-Scream (pronounced like Halloween) at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, roughly one to one-and-a-half hours from Orlando. While I have been to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios this year and many years prior, I’ve never attended Howl-O-Scream before. After seeing the TV commercials featuring the Raven Twins, the icons for Howl-O-Scream this year, I figured it was finally time to give it a shot.

I went into the event with middle-of-the-road expectations. I wasn’t expecting to be as thrilled as during Halloween Horror Nights, as that event has consistently set the bar pretty high over the last 18 years, but also wasn’t expecting to be let down either, as Busch Gardens is a great theme park for thrill rides. Howl-O-Scream not only met my expectations, but far surpassed them. I had a wonderful time in all of the haunted houses and many of the street scares showed refreshing originality.

Before I give you my scare-by-scare review of Howl-O-Scream 2008, here’s a video summary of the event, including some scare zone shots, clips from their three shows, and an interview Howl-O-Scream creative director Scott Swenson:

Epcot Food & Wine Festival photos

dsc08603.jpg

The 13th annual Epcot International Food & Wine Festival started on Friday and will run through Nov. 9. This year’s theme is Cities in Wonderland. I’m not sure how this fits in other than the fact that they have music and displays from Alice In Wonderland at the front of the park, and the food and wine stands now have specific cities listed instead of just countries. The Scare Zones of Halloween Horror Nights 18 & Wrap-Up

This is a continuation of my previous review of Halloween Horror Nights 18.

Scare Zones

The scare zones of Halloween Horror Nights 18 are some of the best I have ever seen. While they may not be the scariest ever, they arrive packed with incredibly detailed costumes and inventive surroundings.

Here’s a video showing a few short clips of four of them (the other two were too dark for video):

Below is my ranking of all six zones, accompanied by photos.

1. Asylum in Wonderland
Scare Factor: 3/10
Entertainment Factor: 8/10

While not terribly scary, the Alice in Wonderland-turned-even-crazier theme brings uniquely nutty variations on classic characters in a fun atmosphere.

2. Fractured Tales
Scare Factor: 5/10
Entertainment Factor: 6/10

This zone brings the Scary Tales house into the streets, continuing the theme of twisted fairy tales through elaborate costumes that are a delight to look at.

3. Streets of Blood
Scare Factor: 6/10
Entertainment Factor: 6/10

The “body collectors” make the streets outside their haunted maze into one of the darker scare zones, bringing along a few of their more lively Victorian-era victims who make for very entertaining characters.

4. The Skoolhouse
Scare Factor: 7/10
Entertainment Factor: 5/10

This is probably the most scare-inducing scare zone of them all this year simply due to the fact that there’s an actual building to walk through (above), like a mini-haunted house. Add to that a street filled with fog and hundreds of glowing pumpkins and it becomes a visual feast.

5. American Gothic
Scare Factor: 6/10
Entertainment Factor: 3/10

This zone has a lot of hidden scareactors waiting to pounce but the area is small and not very interesting.

6. The Path of the Wicked
Scare Factor: 3/10
Entertainment Factor: 7/10

Be sure to approach this zone from the front of the park, not the back, as the above-pictured Wicked Witch greets you before entering it. Overhead, flying monkeys make this area fun to watch for a while.

Overall
I did not get a chance to see The Rocky Horror Picture Show Tribute this year, nor did we see magician Brian Brushwood perform, so I can’t comment on those shows. However, the eight houses and six scare zones combine to create one of the best Halloween Horror Nights experiences I’ve had in a long time.

Last year’s introduction of the New Line Cinema characters (Freddy, Jason, and Leatherface) was entertaining, but I was happy that they didn’t simply rehash those ideas again this year but instead replace them with all-new ideas throughout. While several of the houses fell short in the scare department, none were short on impressive design and creativity. Stepping into one of Halloween Horror Nights’ mazes this year is like stepping into a Hollywood film, as all of the sets, costumes, make-up, and effects are movie-quality, if not higher, and are delightful to see in-person.

Halloween Horror Nights 18 2008 Review, Pictures, Video and Tips

Halloween Horror Nights 18 premiered at Universal Studios Orlando last night on September 26, 2008. As we’ve mentioned in the past, this year’s icon is a character by the name of Bloody Mary, based off of urban legends surrounding a mysterious woman who would manifest herself if you were to speak her name three times into a mirror.

Universal has been billing this year’s event as their biggest ever and I’d have to agree. With eight extremely detailed houses and six wonderfully crafted scare zones (plus several stage shows), there is more to see than is even possible in a single night.

Before I get to my scare-by-scare review, here’s a video of the special opening presentation given to the media introducing Bloody Mary.

Download a high-resolution of this video here.

Haunted Houses
Below are some spoiler-free thoughts on each of this year’s haunted houses, ranked in order from best to worst (in my opinion, of course).

1. Scary Tales – Once Upon a Nightmare
Scare Factor: 7/10
Entertainment Factor: 9/10
This house is meant to bring classic fairy tales to life in a gruesome way and it does just that. From Little Red Riding Hood to Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the twisted variations of these classic tales are wonderfully horrendous. The house is packed with visuals and is longer than your average haunted maze. I only wish it had been a little bit brighter in some scenes so I could better take in all of the detail.

2. Dead Exposure
Scare Factor: 9/10
Entertainment Factor: 7/10
You do not want to miss Dead Exposure. Period. The premise is that you’re in the world of a photographer who has stumbled upon an outbreak of zombies… and you’re stepping into his black and white photographs. It’s the most unique of all the houses as it is pitch black inside, with occasional strobes of blacklight illuminating your way, providing you only with a quick “picture” of what’s around you. A constant droning sound gets your heart racing and you never know where the next scare is coming from.

3. Reflections of Fear
Scare Factor: 5/10
Entertainment Factor: 7/10
I expected the icon house featuring Bloody Mary to top the list but ultimately it falls a little short, though still hugely entertaining. While it contains some of the most interesting scenes out of this year’s houses, actual contact with a scary version of Bloody Mary happens less often than I had hoped for. She’s there, but usually not scary. There are far fewer shattering mirrors and much less gore than I anticipated. I suppose I can chalk this one up to my expectations being too high.

4. Body Collectors – Collections of the Past
Scare Factor: 7/10
Entertainment Factor: 7/10
We had a chance to tour Body Collectors a couple of weeks ago while preparing for our cover story for Issue 6 of Orlando Attractions Magazine, so I knew what to expect… and this house delivered on all expectations. The “body collectors” themselves have one goal and that is to, well, collect bodies. This house has a few of the more gruesome moments of this year’s event and the “gentlemen” characters seem to pop out behind every corner. The centuries-old London setting makes for a fun experience.

5. Interstellar Terror
Scare Factor: 7/10
Entertainment Factor: 7/10
Like Body Collectors, we had previously toured this house with the work lights on and no scareactors present. It’s a very different experience during Halloween Horror Nights. The house’s story surrounds a spaceship whose crew has gone insane due to a strange artifact being broad aboard. The environment does make you feel that you’re aboard a spaceship and the crew definitely does their job of scaring quite regularly, often with different gags than found in other houses. Many unique effects and special rooms make Interstellar Terror a must-see.

6. “Creatures”
Scare Factor: 4/10
Entertainment Factor: 7/10
Every year, one house brings a sense of humor to Halloween Horror Nights and Creatures is that house this year. Unfortunately, the ’50s sci-fi movie meets hillbillies theme is too heavy on the hillbillies and doesn’t focus enough on the house’s namesake: the creatures. While shotgun-toting rednecks are enjoyable throughout, most of the action happens out of sight through sound effects. However, this was one of the few houses that got a good scare out of me via misdirection.

7. The Hallow
Scare Factor: 2/10
Entertainment Factor: 3/10
The story behind the basics of Halloween is what The Hallow is supposed to be about. The musty smell of dust in the air adds a unique ambience to the house but beyond that, the house is too dark to see much of anything. I didn’t see any story elements at any point while walking through the maze and the scares are limited, if present at all. Overall, slightly entertaining but not worth a long wait.

8. Doomsday
Scare Factor: 3/10
Entertainment Factor: 2/10
If you haven’t seen the recent film Doomsday (which I haven’t), you’ll be completely baffled as to what’s going on inside this house. I received an explanation of the plot prior to going inside and the house still didn’t make a whole lot of sense. The house is very short and the scareactors didn’t seem like they wanted to scare anyone, but instead just stand around.

Tips for Halloween Horror Nights 18
1. Keep an eye out for a some unexpected and sometimes amazing appearances of Bloody Mary in haunted houses other than Reflections of Fear. I actually enjoyed seeing her in one other house more than I did in her own (but I won’t ruin the surprise here).

2. If you’re running short on time and have to choose between seeing this year’s Bill and Ted’s Excellent Halloween Adventure and fitting in a few more houses, go for the houses. Bill and Ted’s show is not as funny as it has been in the past and some of the houses are more entertaining than ever before.

3. Make sure you experience all six scare zones at night. They are incredible this year and rival what goes on inside the haunted mazes.

I’ll have another post coming up later today ranking the six scare zones of Halloween Horror Nights 18, including pictures and video.

Be sure to pick up a copy of Issue 6 of Orlando Attractions Magazine to read all about the making of Halloween Horror Nights, including an exclusive interview with show director/writer Michael Roddy and some additional fun items to look for while wandering through the houses. The issue is available now for pre-order right here.
