Disney World 55th anniversary brings merchandise, a morning event and expansions
Walt Disney World turns 55 on Oct. 1, 2026, with commemorative merchandise, a morning event and a message focused on what comes next. But some of its most appealing birthday souvenirs look back to where it all began.

A cream-colored anniversary mug brings back the classic Walt Disney World logo and “The Vacation Kingdom of the World” slogan, alongside artwork featuring Cinderella Castle, the Contemporary Resort and a monorail. It harkens back to the original vision of Walt Disney World. Meanwhile, the kingdom itself is marching into the future.
Disney is using the 55th anniversary milestone to highlight continued investment and major expansions — a look toward the future.
How Disney World is celebrating its 55th anniversary
Walt Disney World is marking its Oct. 1 birthday with a morning anniversary moment, commemorative merchandise and a look at the resort’s continued growth. A member of the Attractions Magazine team will be there this morning, so stay tuned to our social media channels for coverage and subscribe to our newsletter.
Disney is also reflecting on its investments across theme parks, hotels and other experiences. According to the company, more than 70 experiences have opened or been refreshed since 2021, while major expansions are moving forward at Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Beyond the theme parks, Hurly-Burly opens today at Disney’s BoardWalk, with family-friendly entertainment from 4–9 p.m., followed by live music from 9 p.m. until close, and lots of lore and backstory too.
For guests looking to take home a piece of the birthday celebration, the anniversary collection offers a distinctly familiar connection: classic Walt Disney World imagery and reminders of the original Vacation Kingdom.
Anniversary merchandise remembers the Vacation Kingdom
We spotted 55th anniversary merchandise at World of Disney at Disney Springs and at Epcot, including a navy backpack, pullover hoodie, ear headband and light blue-green T-shirt.

Mickey Mouse appears in a Main Street, U.S.A.-inspired outfit, tipping his hat in front of Cinderella Castle on the shirt. The backpack, hoodie and ears incorporate colorful emblems representing all four theme parks, alongside anniversary logos and other park details.
A cream-colored mug showcases the resort’s beginnings. One side features Cinderella Castle, Disney’s Contemporary Resort, a monorail and sailboats beneath a soft red silhouette of Florida. The reverse brings back the classic Walt Disney World logo and “The Vacation Kingdom of the World Since 1971” wording.

Disney highlights investment and continued expansion
In materials shared ahead of the anniversary, Disney describes the resort’s recent additions and refreshes as “nearly a theme park’s worth of experiences” over the past five years. That figure includes both newly opened experiences and updates to existing offerings.
The company also says more development is underway today than at any other point in Walt Disney World’s history.

“As we celebrate 55 years, we’re proud of the incredible Cast Members who have shaped our story and excited about the opportunities ahead as Walt Disney World continues to grow. That growth creates opportunity across Central Florida, and it reflects our long-term confidence in this community and in the future of Walt Disney World.”
Joe Schott, president of Walt Disney World Resort
The accompanying infographic provides a look at that investment over the past decade, listing three new lands, more than 18 new attractions, four new resorts and additions, more than 25 entertainment offerings and two new modes of transportation. It pairs recent additions and attraction refreshes with a look at projects on the horizon.

At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Monstropolis will bring the world of “Monsters, Inc.” into the park. Our early look explored how Imagineers are developing the land’s story, atmosphere and attractions, while our construction coverage follows its progress.
Disney’s Animal Kingdom is preparing for Tropical Americas, with experiences inspired by “Encanto” and Indiana Jones. At Magic Kingdom, Piston Peak National Park and Villains Land form what Disney describes as the largest expansion in the park’s history.

Those projects give the anniversary a forward-looking message. The merchandise supplies the historical connection — and this morning’s anniversary moment offers an opportunity to bring the two together.
