The Epic Universe Preview Center is closed (UPDATED with new Legacy Store info)

The Epic Universe Preview Center at Universal CityWalk Orlando closed on April 13, making way for the return of the Universal Legacy Store. While the change reflects the next phase of Universal Epic Universe now that the park is open, the closure feels emotional for some fans.

With Epic Universe now welcoming guests, the closure of the preview center makes sense on paper. The experience was always designed to build anticipation, not exist alongside a fully operational theme park. And yet, fans of the theme park industry, like me, consider it an emotional loss.

The Universal Legacy Store reopens April 24, 2026

The revamped Legacy Story reopens tomorrow, Friday, April 24, 2026! This new store will feature exclusive retro merchandise and larger-than-life photo ops inspired by beloved Universal Studios Florida attractions and films from Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment, including E.T., Jaws, and Back to the Future, as well as Universal Monsters.

A unique experience comes to an end

When the preview center first opened in June 2023 at Universal CityWalk Orlando, it offered something Orlando hadn’t seen in decades: a dedicated, immersive space built entirely around a theme park that didn’t exist yet.

For many, it became a way to stay connected to Epic Universe during the long wait. And for fans, visitors, and locals like me, it has existed as a special touchpoint without theme park admission. It has acted as a portal to the emotional vibes of Epic Universe.

Visiting the actual park regularly isn’t always feasible, whether due to cost or time constraints. The preview center filled that gap, offering a way to experience the excitement. In that way, it became more than a temporary exhibit. It became part of the story of Epic Universe itself.

And given the scale of Epic Universe and the unique nature of opening a new theme park in Orlando, it’s not unreasonable to think we may not see something quite like it again anytime soon.

What happens to the Epic Universe model?

One of the biggest lingering questions is what becomes of the detailed park model that anchored the experience. Will it move backstage and be used internally? Or could it find a new home where guests can still experience it?

There’s a strong case for keeping it accessible. A location like Orlando International Airport, which already features a small Epic Universe retail presence, could offer a natural next step. The model could continue doing what it did best: building excitement and extending the reach of Epic Universe beyond the park itself.

For now, its future remains one of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding the closure.

The Universal Legacy Store comes back

Taking its place is a familiar concept, but one rooted in a very different kind of emotion.

The Universal Legacy Store is set to return, bringing merchandise and photo opportunities inspired by classic films and attractions.

The concept itself dates back to June 2021, when the original store opened at Universal CityWalk Orlando and quickly became a fan-favorite for its deep-cuts and theming.

The Legacy Store looks back, celebrating the history of Universal Studios Florida and the attractions that helped define it, most of which no longer exist. You can expect to find exclusive retro merchandise and themed photo opportunities inspired by classic films and attractions like ‘E.T.,’ ‘Jaws,’ ‘Back to the Future’ and Universal Monsters.

For guests trying to picture it, the experience is similar to the Universal Studios Store, but on a smaller scale. Guests can expect multiple sections and a mix of merchandise displays and themed environments.

Previously, the store featured:

  • Dedicated sections themed to individual properties
  • Display pieces inspired by ride vehicles and attraction elements
  • Tribute-style signage and graphics referencing closed rides

As the Epic Universe Preview Center closes, it marks the end of a very specific kind of experience, one that let guests connect with what was coming long before they could step inside the park itself. And as the Legacy Store returns, it’s a reminder that at Universal, the past and the future are never that far apart.
