Fire in the Hole roller coaster takes its final ride this weekend

On Dec. 30, 2023, Silver Dollar City’s indoor coaster Fire In The Hole will pull through the station for the final time, culminating a historic 51 seasons of operation, the world’s longest-standing indoor roller coaster.

Fire In The Hole made history when it opened in 1972 as one of the world’s first indoor roller coasters, with fire-brigade-themed trains that twist and turn through a burning town before a splash-down water finale. Earlier this month, Silver Dollar City selected the 48 riders to fill the four coaster trains for its final ride. After the park closes the coaster’s queue for the evening, the lucky 48 will be the final public riders and receive a mounted piece of the coaster track and other keepsakes commemorating the ride’s retirement.

“Though we are now down to the final hours of the original Fire In The Hole, this ride has been meaningful to our guests for generations,” said Silver Dollar City President Brad Thomas. “The coaster tells a story of the Ozark Mountains and is uniquely Silver Dollar City, but also a ride families can ride together, as millions of children have ridden with their parents and grandparents. We know we will still have many first-time riders, while some have ridden countless times over the decades, returning this weekend for one last memory. Many of those guests even first rode with their grandparents years ago, now riding with their own grandkids!”

The park will host Fire In The Hole’s “Grand Finale” festivities all day on Dec. 30, 2023, including live entertainment in the coaster’s queue, Christmas caroling, pop-up surprises, and visits from Silver Dollar City’s most iconic Citizens.Through Dec. 30, all riders will receive a celebration sticker commemorating the coaster’s “Final Ride Days.”

New Fire in the Hole Coaster Coming in 2024

The new $30 million ride – the centerpiece of the newly incorporated Fire District –will be nearly a third-of-a-mile long and feature a powered incline, three gravity-driven drops, and a quick-splash landing. The new attraction will also feature a custom soundtrack with high-resolution onboard audio, show lighting effects, and enhanced special effects.

We got a look at the new coaster’s ride vehicles last month at IAAPA Expo 2023.

  1. I cannot believe they are redoing Fire In The Hole! I love it I was one of the people who got a sticker and the line was long! But it was worth it! Fire In The Hole will not be the same! I wish I had gotten a mounted piece of track! But I got a t shirt! If you know anyone who has a mounted piece of track I would love to have it!
