Walt Disney Imagineers worked with Disneyland Paris and Pixar Animation Studios to present the story of Miguel and his family. Let’s look at five details to watch for at this new “Coco-”inspired restaurant.

1. A Statue to Live on Forever

A familiar face welcomes guests to Casa de Coco: a life-size bronze statue of Miguel dressed in the traditional mariachi clothing.

2. Papel Picados

As guests enter the patio, colorful papel picados (paper flags) flutter above. Pixar artists used the traditional Mexican papel picados to introduce audiences to the Rivera family’s past in the movie’s opening scene.

Fun Fact: Nearly 200 papel picados were created for the restaurant by Imagineers, who found inspiration for the motifs in Mexican folklore, music, and floral elements.

3. Colorful Alebrijes

Spirit guides to the Land of the Dead – known as Alebrijes – are another Mexican art form that inspired Pixar artists and Imagineers.

In the restaurant, a colorful carved alebrije representing Miguel’s spirit guide, Dante, stretches to either side of the counter.

4. A Guitar to Remember

In la Sala de Música (the Music Room), the symbol of Miguel’s rediscovered family’s heritage is displayed among the many musical instruments: Héctor’s guitar.

Fun Fact: Pixar shared original references, which allowed Imagineers to translate unique elements (like pages of Hector’s diary) from the screen to reality.

5. Celebrating una Familia de Zapateros

In la Sala de Familia (the Family Room), portraits honor family members to ensure their stories live on.

The room also displays items representing the shoemaking trade that brought Miguel’s family together, including tools and shoe boxes featuring the family brand.
