Interview: Silver Dollar City’s theme park stories are original and real

Silver Dollar City doesn’t have to look to a movie screen or fictional universe to find the stories behind its next attraction. Sometimes, the inspiration is already beneath its feet.

That’s quite literally the case with Miner’s Mountain Express, the park’s new family coaster opening in 2027. Its story reaches back to the real mining history of the land that became Silver Dollar City — an approach that reflects a much broader creative philosophy across Herschend’s attractions.

Herschend Creative Studios Merrill Puckett Miller, chief creative officer interview

“We’re super blessed that we operate in communities and places that have rich stories to tell,” Merrill Puckett Miller, chief creative officer for Herschend Creative Studios, told Attractions Magazine. “We don’t have to go look for stories. We don’t have to go to outer space.”

The theme parks and attractions industry is full of fantastical stories that whisk guests away to faraway or fictional places. Instead, Miller said Herschend looks for stories rooted in the people and places surrounding its parks and then finds ways to build upon them.

“We are about authenticity of people, place and story,” Miller said. “That is really the Herschend philosophy.”

Miner’s Mountain Express digs into Silver Dollar City history

Miner’s Mountain Express is an upcoming attraction with a story behind it that has been more than a century in the making.

“This is based on a real story, so this story has been in existence for more than 100 years,” Miller said. Herschend’s historical-fiction take on that history, she added, has been in development for more than two years.

The inspiration comes from the mining history of the property itself. Long before Silver Dollar City opened, Marble Cave — today known as Marvel Cave — attracted prospectors who believed its deposits could have commercial value. Miller said the real Marble Cave Mining Company became a natural starting point as the creative team researched the coaster.

“The Marble Cave Mining Company — that was a real working mine on this location,” Miller said. “That was the perfect story to tell.”

Miner’s Mountain Express builds a fictional adventure around that history, including prospector Jeb, who continues searching for a way back into the mine.

The story also carries a message: “Luck is not found, it’s forged.” Miller said that idea is about more than finding treasure.

“We believe in good messages families need to hear,” Miller said. “Luck is forged, and it’s forged by hard work. So it’s really not luck.”

Herschend attractions are built around people, place and story

Miner’s Mountain Express is one example of a creative philosophy Miller said extends across Herschend properties. Miller said Herschend intentionally gives its attractions a central positive idea, pointing to another Silver Dollar City coaster as an example.

With Time Traveler, that message is “dream big and do good.”

“Not just dream big, but do good with it,” Miller said.

There is room for humor, too

Authenticity doesn’t mean every detail needs to be serious. “One of the things that’s really special about Herschend projects — for sure Silver Dollar City projects — is there’s always humor embedded,” Miller said.

She encouraged guests to look for smaller moments designed to make them laugh or smile as they experience Miner’s Mountain Express.

“There also might be a critter or two that makes their way into signage or maybe into some of the elements on the ride,” Miller teased.

Creating memories is part of the philosophy

Just before our interview, Miller spoke with The Branson Fam, of social media fame, whose children participated in the Mini Miners group involved with the Miner’s Mountain Express announcement. As I waited for my turn to chat with Miller, I admired her enthusiasm toward the family.

Their father thanked Miller for helping create an experience his children would remember for the rest of their lives. “That’s why we do what we do,” Miller responded.

It was a brief exchange, but one that neatly summarized much of what Miller would tell me moments later. And it reminded me of why I got into this industry myself two decades ago. The history and storytelling provide the foundation, but ultimately those stories are being turned into experiences families can share.

Silver Dollar City’s story is expanding beyond the park

The company is developing its first resort hotel for the Branson destination, scheduled to open in 2027 and designed to continue the Silver Dollar City experience after guests leave the theme park.

It represents another opportunity to apply the philosophy Miller described: start with the place, understand its stories and create something that belongs there.

Anyone who may miss discovering an attraction without already knowing its characters from a movie, television series or other franchise, Silver Dollar City and many other Herschend attractions provide the same reprieve.

Across Herschend’s portfolio, which includes Silver Dollar City and Dollywood, Miller said “people, place and story” guides the company’s creative approach. After spending time at Silver Dollar City, I can say that it is indeed the real stories and experiences that differentiate it from the shiny places I enjoy back home in Orlando. And as I prepare to depart Branson, Mo. I will carry those stories with me, and I suspect that is precisely the point of it all.
