Silver Dollar City’s new Christmas parade is twice as long with Rudolph characters

As the cost of major theme park vacations continues to climb, Silver Dollar City offers a reminder that regional parks can deliver ambitious entertainment, distinctive theming and family-friendly value of their own. Our team has visited the charming Ozarks park and become fans, and its newest investment comes with a little extra pixie dust from a veteran of Disney parades.

Stars, Lights & Christmas Nights Parade debuts Nov. 7 during Silver Dollar City’s An Old Time Christmas celebration. The interactive “show on the go” will be twice the length of the park’s former Christmas parade, bringing new floats, an original musical score and opportunities for children to step into the holiday story.

Disney parade veteran helps create Silver Dollar City production

Herschend Creative Studios is leading the creative effort alongside Mike and Joyce Avila of The Imagination House. Mike Avila composed the parade’s original score and has helped create approximately 20 major parades during his career. His work includes long-running Christmas and Halloween parades for Disney, as well as contributions to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and Rose Parade.

“One of my favorite parts of creating a parade is watching families experience it for the first time,” Avila said in Silver Dollar City’s announcement. “Our entire team has poured its heart into making this parade magical, immersive and filled with moments that create lasting Christmas memories.”

The floats and technical elements are being constructed by River City Scenic inside a warehouse near Cincinnati, Ohio. Silver Dollar City team members visited the facility earlier this summer as towering floats, lighting effects and larger-than-life characters began taking shape.

The park says the new production is intended to become part of families’ holiday traditions for years to come.

“We aren’t simply designing floats and costumes,” Mallory Hall of Herschend Creative Studios said. “We’re helping create the backdrop for years of family traditions and treasured memories.”

Rudolph, Misfit Toys and interactive surprises

Each performance begins with a vintage automobile decorated with garland and gifts. The vehicle will carry the parade’s Grand Marshal through Silver Dollar City before the larger procession arrives.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and familiar friends return, joined this year by Yukon Cornelius and several Misfit Toy characters.

Stars, Lights & Christmas Nights then travels through a series of nostalgic holiday scenes. Children along the route can hand their Christmas letters directly to Santa’s elves, who will collect the wishes for delivery to the North Pole.

A Home for the Holidays scene celebrates the excitement of preparing for Christmas Eve. A sparkling one-horse open sleigh carries carolers through the park, while some young guests will be invited to join the parade as festive ornaments.

Lollipop-twirling dancers lead into a sweeter portion of the procession, followed by Mrs. Claus and her magical sugar shaker. Santa Claus eventually appears high above the crowd behind a team of galloping reindeer.

The mood changes as the parade reaches its final scenes. Trumpeters and a holy choir introduce an illuminated Nativity float focused on the first Christmas and the religious meaning of the holiday.

This new parade also reflects a broader strategy for Herschend. During a recent industry panel, Herschend executive Andy Westfall said live entertainment, festivals, and special activations will continue to play a major role in the company’s future, making An Old Time Christmas more than just a seasonal celebration—it’s a key part of how the company is encouraging guests to extend their visits.

Silver Dollar City begins hanging 6.5 million lights

Christmas preparations are already underway in the middle of summer. Crews began hanging the first of more than 6.5 million lights around Silver Dollar City in July.

The park removes the lights after each Christmas season to help prevent fading, then installs them again using nearly 900,000 staples. The display covers buildings throughout the 1880s-themed park and includes approximately 1.5 million lights in Christmas in Midtown alone.

An Old Time Christmas also features Broadway-style productions, seasonal dining, handcrafted gifts, the Frisco Sing-Along Steam Train and two major illuminated trees. Joy on Town Square stars an eight-story animated tree, while a real Grand Fir is presented with a Rockefeller Center-style lighting ceremony.

The scale of the celebration shows why regional parks deserve a place in the broader theme park vacation conversation. Silver Dollar City combines roller coasters, demonstrating craftspeople, live entertainment and elaborate seasonal festivals, while practical perks such as complimentary standard parking can help families control the cost of a visit.
