Great Stirrup Cay water park: Norwegian Cruise Line reviews new details ahead of opening

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) wants their guests to experience “The Great Life” with expanded features coming this summer to its private island, Great Stirrup Cay. Expect water slides, Jet Karts, a lazy river, swim-up bars, and more. This paradise was master-planned by Orlando-based Martin Aquatic.

Norwegian Cruise Line is moving closer to debuting its expanded Great Stirrup Cay experience, with new details on the upcoming Great Tides Water Park. The island expansion was master-planned by Martin Aquatic (an Orlando-based firm) with slides and play structures supplied by WhiteWater West.

Great Tides Water Park will bring thrills and family fun

Great Tides Water Park will include nineteen waterslides, an almost 800-foot Dynamic River, a new Jet Karts Water Track, cliff jumps, swim-up bars, a 9,000-square-foot splash zone, hammocks, etc. Cruisers looking for relaxation or adventure should be able to find it. No matter the age.

Tidal Tower, Cliffside Cove and Splash Harbor headline major attractions

Tidal Tower will be the park’s main draw for water slide fans. Standing 170 feet tall, the structure will feature eight waterslides, including the two tallest attractions in Great Tides Water Park. The tower will also feature mat racer slides, spiraling tube slides, body slides and tube attractions. Rafts and tubes will be carried to the top by a conveyor system.

According to reporting from the Orlando Sentinel, the structure will stand about five feet taller than Royal Caribbean’s Daredevil’s Tower at Perfect Day at CocoCay (which is right next door to Great Stirrup Cay.)

Guests can also visit Cliffside Cove, the park’s more adventurous area, which will feature racer slides, 10- and 15-foot cliff jumps and what Norwegian has described as the Caribbean’s only wide family slide, designed for up to four riders at a time. Those who prefer to watch can head to The Grotto Bar, located beneath the family slide, where guests can enjoy drinks while overlooking the action.

For families with younger children, Great Tides Water Park will include a 9,000-square-foot splash zone in the center of the park. The area will feature tipping buckets, mini waterslides and interactive play elements for kids of all ages.

Norwegian has said slides and play structures throughout the park will be supplied by WhiteWater West, which has partnered with Martin Aquatic (the master planner) on multiple projects, including the upcoming Mattel indoor water parks.

No water park is complete without a lazy river… this will be better

New details! Instead of a traditional lazy river, Great Tides Water Park will feature a more than 800-foot dynamic river with a faster-moving current. The attraction is expected to take guests about four to six minutes to circle the park and will offer four entry points around the area.

One of its signature elements will be a 110-foot immersive tunnel featuring LED lighting and projections designed to create a glowing, bioluminescent-inspired scene. Nearby, guests will also find a swim-up bar and wading area along the route.

Several Great Stirrup Cay upgrades are already open

While Great Tides Water Park is still under construction ahead of its summer debut, has already opened several new amenities at Great Stirrup Cay, including Great Life Lagoon, a new multi-ship pier, a scenic welcome plaza, and an islandwide tram service.

Great Life Lagoon features a 1.4-acre heated pool area with private oceanview and poolside cabanas, complimentary loungers and two swim-up bars serving family-friendly and adult beverages.

One side of the pool includes The Reef Bar, a lively swim-up venue with a DJ, while The Waves Bar offers a beach-entry area leading to nearby family splash features. Families can also enjoy Splash Harbor, a 3,400-square-foot splash pad with interactive fountains, water features and shaded lounge space for parents.

More than slides and water attractions

Beyond the aquatic additions, Horizon Park offers a complimentary recreation area with lawn games, pickleball courts, a nine-hole mini golf course, a half sports court and more. Guests looking for extra thrills can also try the island’s Jet Karts racecourse.

Those seeking a slower pace can head to Hammock Bay, where more than 50 hammocks provide space to relax near the island barbecue buffet and bar. For adults looking for a quieter retreat, Vibe Shore Club offers an 18-and-up experience with a private bar, hanging daybeds and premium lounge seating. Guests can purchase a day pass, with upgraded amenities and villas also available.

The broader island expansion was master-planned by Orlando-based Martin Aquatic, while WhiteWater West will supply slides and play structures in Great Tides Water Park.

The big picture

With several first-phase upgrades already open and Great Tides Water Park still on the way, Norwegian Cruise Line is positioning Great Stirrup Cay as a larger part of its overall vacation experience, giving guests more to do both on shore and onboard.

“Great Stirrup Cay has always been an amazing part of the Norwegian Cruise Line guest experience and continues to be one of our highest-rated destinations,” said David J. Herrera.

“At 270 acres, our private island provides us with an incredible blueprint to reinvent what guests can experience when they escape to ‘The Great Life’ with us. This new waterpark is an outstanding addition to our recent announcement about other amazing new amenities on the island soon to debut.

With each phase of our enhancements, we’re bringing ashore more of what our guests love about sailing with NCL. Whether you want to relax by the huge new heated pool – complete with multiple swim up bars, are looking forward to racing down one of the 19 waterslides with your kids at Great Tides Water Park, or just want to enjoy the ocean breeze from one of the hammocks at Hammock Bay, Great Stirrup Cay will soon boast even more ways to escape to YOUR ‘great life’ for a memorable vacation on and off the ship. I am thrilled to welcome our guests to the greatest private island in the Caribbean!”

Great Tides Water Park is expected to open in late July 2026, though Norwegian Cruise Line has publicly listed the broader timeline as summer 2026.
