Rupert Grint will join ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ on Broadway as Ron Weasley

Bloody hell. Rupert Grint is returning to the role of Ron Weasley for the first time in more than 15 years, joining “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” on Broadway beginning Feb. 2, 2027.

Grint played Harry Potter’s red-haired best friend throughout all eight “Harry Potter” films, concluding with “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2” in 2011. He will now portray the adult Ron, who is married to Hermione Granger and raising their children as another generation begins its own adventure at Hogwarts.

The Broadway production announced Grint’s casting in an Instagram video showing his name printed across a “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” script.

Grint will become the second actor from the original “Harry Potter” film series to reprise his role in the Broadway production. Tom Felton joined “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” as Draco Malfoy in November 2025, becoming the first film actor to make the leap into the stage sequel.

Felton’s repeatedly extended engagement is scheduled to end Jan. 3, 2027, approximately one month before Grint’s first performance.

Grint is no stranger to Broadway. He made his Broadway debut in 2014 in “It’s Only a Play,” appearing alongside Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane and Megan Mullally. His stage credits also include the West End production of “Mojo.”

About “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”

19 years after Harry Potter and his friends leave Hogwarts, his head-strong son Albus Potter befriends Scorpius Malfoy, the son of Harry’s Hogwarts nemesis. The unlikely friendship sparks a new magical journey, including the power to change the past and future forever.

Performed initially as two full-length shows where audiences could choose to attend morning and evening shows on the same day or choose to attend on two consecutive days, “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is now reimagined (and condensed) into one action- and magic-packed production featuring a “mind-blowing race through time, spectacular spells, and an epic battle, all brought to life with the most astonishing theatrical magic ever seen on a Broadway stage.”

“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” also has a North American touring production, but Rupert Grint’s performances will be in the Broadway production only.

Rupert Grint’s return comes during Harry Potter’s 25th anniversary

Grint’s casting arrives as the Wizarding World celebrates 25 years since “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” reached theaters in 2001.

The anniversary celebration continues throughout 2026 with limited-time offerings at Universal theme parks, new merchandise and the theatrical rerelease of the first film. “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” returns to select theaters from Aug. 27 through Sept. 3 with 10 minutes of behind-the-scenes material not previously shown in theaters.

The celebration leads into Back to Hogwarts on Sept. 1, the date Hogwarts students traditionally board the Hogwarts Express at 11 a.m. for the beginning of a new school year.

This year’s Back to Hogwarts Showcase will stream Sept. 1 on the official Harry Potter YouTube and TikTok channels. The annual presentation is expected to include announcements and updates from across the franchise, adding another reason to keep watch following Grint’s unexpected return to Ron Weasley.

The Weasley family has a major presence in Universal’s theme parks

At Universal Orlando Resort, Ron appears alongside Harry and Hermione in “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey,” including scenes created specifically for the attraction. He is also part of ‘Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts,’ which follows the trio’s attempt to break into the wizarding bank during “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.”

The Gringotts attraction also features Ron’s older brother Bill Weasley as its host.

Ron can also be encountered during the Hogwarts Express experience through the characters and shadow scenes appearing outside the train compartment. Elsewhere in the resort, the family’s flying Ford Anglia has become part of Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure.

The most colorful Weasley landmark is Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes in Diagon Alley. Fred and George’s orange joke shop sells magical pranks, toys and Pygmy Puffs beneath a ceiling filled with never-ending fireworks. Even Molly Weasley’s memorable Howler to Ron has inspired merchandise sold within the land.

For Grint, it appears the Hogwarts Express is ready to carry Ron Weasley toward one more adventure.
