The coaster is finally about to open, but its debut has been bumpy. Six Flags originally announced the coaster in August 2024, saying it would open in 2025. The park announced Quantum Accelerator’s delayed opening date of 2026 on July 1, 2025, saying:

When it comes to debuting world-class attractions for our guests, we won’t rush the process. Therefore, we are moving the debut of Quantum Accelerator to 2026. This reflects our commitment to quality, comfort, and reliability. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Manufacturers Intamin, Schaan, and Liechtenstein built Quantum Accelerator for Six Flags.

Several other straddle coasters built by Intamin — including DarKoaster at Busch Gardens Williamsburg and Arctic Rescue at SeaWorld San Diego — are currently listed as “temporarily closed” on their respective websites. (h/t to reader Michael)

This coaster is one of a few at a Six Flags park that was significantly delayed from its original opening timeline. Top Thrill 2 opened at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, in May 2024, but closed just one week later and didn’t reopen until May 2025. Additionally, the coasters Georgia Gold Rusher (at Six Flags Over Georgia near Atlanta, Ga.) and The Flash: Vertical Velocity (at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson Township, N.J.) were originally promoted to open in 2024, but were ultimately delayed until 2025 (and are both now open).

The coaster Quantum Accelerator includes two launches and reaches a maximum speed of 45 mph. Season Passholders will receive exclusive first access to the new ride during opening weekend. Access to all other guests begins Friday, April 17, as the park kicks off daily operation for Spring Break Days.

Guests must be at least 48 inches tall to ride.

On a straddle coaster, riders mount their seat like a motorcycle, rather than sitting upright. For example, Tron: Lightcycle / Run at Magic Kingdom and DarKoaster at Busch Gardens Williamsburg are both straddle coasters.

Steampunk time travel

Quantum Accelerator has its own backstory:

In a quiet, secret transaction, Professor Screamore purchased the tiny town of Crackaxle Canyon. The abandoned wild west outpost was the perfect hiding place for his laboratory of bizarre inventions.

Time travel always fascinated the eccentric inventor. He dreamed of combining old-world technologies, like steam-powered machinery, with modern marvels to launch himself back and forth through time — but not straight paths through time. Professor Screamore wanted to travel at high speeds with twists, turns, and lots of ups and downs with airtime. Now the professor is almost ready to reveal his latest creation: Quantum Accelerator. Ready to launch into yesterday and tomorrow, steampunk style?

Professor Screamore is an original character who is also the main character of Six Flags America’s SteamTown area, which opened in summer 2024 (and will subsequently shutter at the end of 2025 as the entire theme park closes permanently). Now he’ll make his debut at Six Flags New England in 2026.
