Star Wars named most-tattooed movie franchise
According to new research, Star Wars is the most-tattooed movie franchise, with nearly 370,000 posts on Instagram, but how did your favorite stack up?
The website Casinos en Ligne looked at Instagram hashtag data for 150 popular movies to determine the most-inked movies and franchises worldwide.
Here’s what they found out:
Most-Tattooed Movie Franchises
The Star Wars franchise, which began in 1977 with the blockbuster Star Wars (later renamed Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope), appeals to fans of all ages, so it’s no surprise it’s also the most-tattooed movie franchise with 369,958 Instagram hashtags. Star Wars-themed posts on Instagram showcase all nine films in the “Skywalker saga“ and spin-offs.
In second place is the magical Harry Potter movies based on the novels by J.K Rowling, with the hashtag #harrypottertattoo used over 338,000 times on Instagram. Harry Potter-related tattoos include designs featuring Hogwarts castle, the Deathly Hallows, and even the characters themselves.
The third most-tattooed movie franchise is the 2019 psychological thriller Joker, which starred Joaquin Phoenix as the DC Comics character from the Batman movies. With 310,395 tattoo-related hashtags on Instagram, the Joker is also the most-tattooed movie villain. In addition to Phoenix, the Joker has been portrayed by Jack Nicholson, Jared Leto, and Heath Ledger.
Right behind the most-tattooed movie villain is the most-tattooed movie superhero: Batman, who comes in fourth place with 130,997 tattoo-related hashtags.
Fun Fact: There have been 20 Batman films dating back to 1943.
Rounding out the top five is Friday the 13th as the most-tattooed horror movie with 109,688 tattoo-related hashtags.
Most-Tattooed Movie Genres
In addition to specific movies and franchises, the study also determined the most-tattooed movie genres.
Fantasy is at the top for genre, with 474,380 tattoo-related hashtags spanning seven movies, including Harry Potter (the highest-ranking fantasy film), The Lord of the Rings, Avatar, and The Hobbit.
In second place is science fiction, which earned its position despite only one science fiction movie making the top 10 – Star Wars in the top spot. In all, science fiction has 383,995 tattoo-related hashtags across ten movies, including E.T., Back to the Future, and The Matrix.
In third and fourth place, respectively, is the thriller genre, which has 321,865 tattoo-related hashtags across eight movies, including Joker, Jaws, The Silence of the Lambs, and Psycho; and the superhero genre, which has 316,600 tattoo-related hashtags and 12 movies on the list, including two in the top 10 – Batman and Spider-Man – as well as Iron Man, Superman, and Thor.
In fifth place (and surprisingly with substantially fewer tattoo-related posts) is animation, which has only 191,650 hashtags spanning 26 films, including The Nightmare Before Christmas, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and Shrek.

Methodology
Casinos en Ligne consulted entertainment websites to compile a list of popular movies and then determined hashtags for each one, which allowed them to search for associated tattoos (for movie franchises or series, the franchise/series name was used). The total number of Instagram posts under each hashtag determined which movies are most commonly chosen as tattoos, and then the ranking was based on popularity and volume. All data is correct as of March 15, 2023.
