Maui ‘face character,’ Te Fiti puppet debut in ‘The Tale of Moana’ show on Disney Treasure
Maui, Te Fiti, and more characters debut in “The Tale of Moana” show on the Disney Treasure cruise ship.

“The Tale of Moana” live show on the Disney Treasure brings characters from the 2016 film to the stage, many of which have never been seen like this before. Disney shared photos of the new production ahead of the Treasure’s official maiden voyage, which begins Dec. 21, 2024.
Moana appears in all four Walt Disney World theme parks daily; her adventuring companion, Maui, is more elusive. Though Maui appears in Disneyland’s “Magic Happens” parade and in Disney On Ice shows as a masked character, the demigod makes his “face character” debut — meaning, the performer’s face is fully visible — in “The Tale of Moana,” trading a skinsuit for tattoo-like illustrations on the actor’s body.

Other characters in the show who have yet to appear in Disney theme parks include Moana’s Gramma, Chief Tui (Moana’s dad), and Tamatoa the crab.

“The Tale of Moana” also features a large puppet of Te Kā the lava monster, which transforms into the serene Te Fiti.

Elsewhere on the Disney Treasure cruise ship, Miguel and the Rivera family from “Coco” debut as new characters as part of the Plaza de Coco dinner show.

In addition to “The Tale of Moana,” the Disney Treasure also presents full-scale theatrical productions “Beauty and the Beast” and “Seas the Adventure,” the latter of which stars Goofy navigating his way through many Disney stories. “The Tale of Moana” is the only of the three that is completely new to Disney Cruise Line; the others have been performed on other ships.
