Visiting Disney World hotels for Christmas decorations is trickier in 2026

Lake Buena Vista, Fla. — Touring Walt Disney World hotels to see their Christmas decorations is a holiday tradition, but a familiar starting point has changed for 2026. Guests who park at Disney Springs can no longer board a resort bus just to see the displays; Disney now requires a resort stay or a valid dining or experience reservation to use those buses.

Jingle bells, gingerbread smells and twinkling lights cast a spell over Walt Disney World’s resort hotels each Christmas. But getting there to enjoy the decorations takes a little more planning in 2026.

Some guests start their hotel decorations tour by parking at Disney Springs, then ride a resort bus to see the trees, gingerbread displays and decorated lobbies. A transportation change Disney made over the summer complicates that plan for 2026.

Disney Springs transportation changed over the summer

Since June 28, Disney has limited buses from Disney Springs to its resort hotels to guests staying at a Disney Resort hotel or visiting one with a valid dining or experience reservation. Guests are asked to show proof, and those with a qualifying reservation may board the appropriate bus up to two hours before their reservation time.

The change also sparked broader rumors that guests who were not staying at a hotel might be shut out of the resorts altogether. Attractions Magazine tested access to Disney’s Contemporary Resort in July and again in August on a Halloween party night. We reached the resort and visited its public areas both times. Those visits offer a useful starting point for holiday planning, though access and transportation procedures can change as crowds grow.

Here are two ways to plan a holiday outing without relying on a bus from Disney Springs.

Visiting the monorail resorts for Christmas decorations

For a visit to the Magic Kingdom area resorts, the Transportation and Ticket Center is one possible starting point. On our July and August visits, we parked there and took the Resort Monorail to Disney’s Contemporary Resort without needing a hotel reservation.

In August, we also took a boat from the Magic Kingdom area to Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. Check the transportation available on the day you visit, and allow extra time during the holiday season. Theme park parking rates apply unless your admission or eligible Annual Pass includes standard parking.

If Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is on your list, expect a different gingerbread experience this year. The resort’s traditional large gingerbread house will not return for Christmas 2026. Disney says it will have seasonal decorations and new miniature gingerbread displays throughout the resort.

Tips for visiting the Magic Kingdom area resorts

• Book a meal. The Polynesian, Contemporary and Wilderness Lodge have table-service options that cost less than the area’s signature restaurants.
• Check parking when you arrive. A dining reservation does not guarantee a space during the holidays.
• Use the monorail for the Polynesian and Contemporary. Wilderness Lodge is not on the monorail; reach it separately by bus or boat.

The best of both resort areas…

• Try the route my family took last Christmas. We parked at Wilderness Lodge (with confirmed dining reservation) ate at Whispering Canyon Cafe, and enjoyed its decorations.
• Keep exploring. We then took a bus to Hollywood Studios, rode the Skyliner toward Epcot and walked to Beach Club and Yacht Club. Check return transportation hours before you go.

Visiting the BoardWalk area resorts for Christmas decorations

A BoardWalk visit takes a different route. Guests headed to Hurly-Burly may be able to park at Disney’s BoardWalk Inn, but parking is limited and can vary with availability and seasonal demand. Do not count on a parking space there simply because you plan to walk through the hotel and see its decorations.

Another option is to park at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and use transportation to the BoardWalk area, such as the boat. Theme park parking rates apply unless your admission or eligible Annual Pass includes standard parking. Check the return transportation schedule before planning an evening visit.

Tips for visiting the BoardWalk area resorts

• Dine where you want to park. Beaches & Cream at Beach Club and Ale & Compass at Yacht Club are relatively affordable table-service options. Both hotels have decorations to see.
• Make a reservation. Resort parking remains subject to availability and Cast Member direction.
• Consider the Skyliner. From Hollywood Studios, ride to Epcot’s International Gateway and walk to the BoardWalk area resorts without entering Epcot. Theme park parking rates may apply.
