‘Fantasmic!’ at Disneyland celebrates its 30th anniversary today

Today “Fantasmic!” at Disneyland marks its 30th anniversary, and if that’s not reason enough to celebrate, Disney’s longest-running nighttime spectacular is returning to the Rivers of America on May 28, 2022.

The return of “Fantasmic!” completes the lineup of fan-favorite nighttime spectaculars that have been so missed at the resort, along with “World of Color” at California Adventure and the “Main Street Electrical Parade” and “Disneyland Forever” fireworks at Disneyland.

Fun Fact: Since its debut on May 13, 1992, “Fantasmic!” has performed nearly 11,000 shows.

Fantasmic at Disneyland - Sorcerer Mickey

“’Fantasmic!’ is an emotional extravaganza of colorful Disney-animated story scenes, choreographed to an exciting musical score,” wrote Disneyland Public Relations Director Kelsey Lynch in the Disney Parks Blog. “The waters of the Rivers of America come alive as Mickey Mouse dreams he is the Sorcerer’s Apprentice and faces dastardly villains, using the power of his imagination to save the day. Along the way, fantastic events and images as seen in stories like ‘Fantasia,’ ‘The Jungle Book,’ and more come to life with live performers, character appearances, enhanced special effects, and pyrotechnics.”

Over the years, “Fantasmic!” has undergone a few updates, including an enhanced version featuring digital projections – not to mention the spectacular 45-foot-tall fire-breathing Maleficent dragon – that premiered in 2009, and new scenes (plus featured songs from “Aladdin”) that were added in 2017.

“Fantasmic!” will also return to Walt Disney World in 2022 with an all-new sequence featuring live performers, stunts, special effects, and more. No opening date has been announced.
