Marvel and Disney created the ultimate Donald-Wolverine crossover

To celebrate Donald Duck turning 90 and Wolverine turning 50, “What If…? Donald Duck became Wolverine,” comes out July 31, 2024, featuring Donald-Wolverine.

While this crossover seems unlikely, Donald and Logan have a lot of similarities. Neither ever seems to want to be the hero, yet they often are. They’re both also known for their tempers. Donald’s angry quack is infamous in the Disney world, while any Marvel fan is all too familiar with Wolverine’s berserker rage. Yet, most importantly they both have giant hearts, but don’t know it.

The creators behind this comic are writer Luca Barbieri and artist Giada Perissinotto (with variant covers by Ron Lim, peach Momoko, and Phil Noto). In mashing these two icons up, Barbieri said, “Donald Duck and Wolverine are two characters that seem almost impossible to make coexist, but in fact they possess very similar personality: they are both hot-tempered and unlucky, but in adversity they do not lose heart and always show that they have a big heart! Once this point was focused, writing the story turned out to be easy and fun!”

According to Perissinotto, Donald Duck and Wolverine don’t just share a few personality traits, they also both seem to don the sideburns pretty well.

“I always thought Wolverine’s sideburns only looked good on Uncle Scrooge, but when I drew them on Donald Duck I realized they fit him perfectly too,” she said. “Those pointy head tufts and thick sideburns go well with his shaggy being. I had so much fun adapting Wolverine’s hair to Donald Duck that I would do him like this all the time now!”

“Old Man Logan”

The comic will be loosely based on the “Old Man Logan” story, while including other moments from Wolverine’s past. “Old Man Logan” sees Wolverine in a future where the villains won, everywhere is a wasteland, and Logan has a family, and refuses to pop his claws. However, this story will be a bit different as it’s introducing Donald-Wolverine. We’ll also see appearances from Mickey-Hawkeye and Goofy-Hulk.

In “What If…? Donald Duck became Wolverine,” we’ll see Donald-Wolverine in a bleak future where Pete-Skull has transformed Duckberg into a wasteland where superheroes are no more. Old Donald Duck has hung up his claws for naps and grandma’s apple pie. Then his friends show up, asking for help. Old Donald Duck will have to choose whether to stick with naps and pie, or pop those claws and save the world. In addition to following the Old Man Logan story, Donald-Wolverine will also experience some well known moments from his past, including his time with the Uncanny X-Men, and his time with Weapon X.

The announcement for this comic was made this week at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in Italy. This unique one shot is the perfect way to celebrate two iconic and beloved characters, that just may be “the best at what they do, even if what they do best isn’t very nice.” Luca Barbieri and Giada Perissinotto are both acclaimed Disney comic creators. There’s no doubt this will be a comic every Disney and Marvel fan will want to grab. SNIKT!

This isn’t the first Marvel/Disney comic crossover coming this Summer. On June 19, 2024, “Uncle $crooge and the Infinity Dime” will be coming out as well.
