The original special will air June 24, 2024 at 9 p.m. ET on the Reelz cable network. It will subsequently be available to stream beginning June 25, 2024 on Peacock. Yes, this means a Disney documentary will be distributed by Universal (owner of Peacock).

“Walt Disney: Behind the Magic” will focus on Walt Disney the person rather than Disney the corporation, spotlighting topics such as Walt’s creation of Mickey Mouse, the animators’ strike in the 1940s, and the opening of Disneyland.

“Walt Disney: Behind the Magic” will include interviews with:

  • Michael Bowling, host of the “Connecting with Walt” podcast
  • Bob Gurr, former Imagineer
  • Sarah Nilsen, associate professor of film and television studios at the University of Vermont
  • Cubby O’Brien, former Mouseketeer

The length of the documentary is unknown at this time. Reelz announced the special in a press release last month, shared on The Futon Critic. Peacock cited the special among its “everything coming in June” list earlier this week.

“Everyone knows the Disney name, but the man behind it is a mystery to most until now,” said Steve Cheskin, senior vice president of Reelz Programming. “From his early cartoon sketches to opening Disneyland and beyond, ‘Walt Disney: Behind the Magic’ is an insightful look at his relentless vision to give people a fun experience and in the process radically alter what it meant to be entertained.”
