(Review) The new Buzz Lightyear drinks at Magic Kingdom couldn’t be more different

Magic Kingdom has introduced two new Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin-themed beverages in Tomorrowland, but despite sharing the same attraction-inspired branding, the drinks deliver very different experiences.

During a recent visit, we tried both the Zurg Overload Shake and the Space Ranger Float. One was so sweet that I ended up throwing away about half of it, while the other was refreshing enough that my son has asked us to go back to Magic Kingdom for another. Here’s how the two drinks compare.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin-themed drinks at Magic Kingdom

These two Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin-themed drinks are currently available for a limited time this summer at Auntie Gravity’s Galactic Goodies in Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom. My son and I treated ourselves to these sugary summer drinks after another spin on the revamped Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin ride.

Zurg Overload Shake ($9.29)

Rating: 2.75/5

The Zurg Overload Shake certainly looks impressive, with its bright red color, purple whipped topping, and Zurg medallion. Unfortunately, it’s heavy on the sweetness.

The vanilla shake itself is fairly rich (though not freshly handspun), and the cherry coating lining the inside of the cup pushes it even further. The coating works similarly to a Magic Shell-style topping, sticking to the sides of the cup. It doesn’t add much flavor, but it does create a thick layer that you’ll need to scrape off as you drink. With the paper straw provided, that’s easier said than done.

The menu describes the topping as marshmallow whipped cream, but ours tasted more like salted caramel. The artificial coloring was also noticeable.

This is definitely a drink best shared between two people. The portion is large, very sweet, and starts to feel heavy before you reach the bottom.

Space Ranger Float ($7.49)

Rating: 4/5

The Space Ranger Float was much more enjoyable.

The combination of lime Dole Whip, vanilla soft serve, Sprite, and green apple flavor creates a bright, citrus-forward drink that feels refreshing instead of overwhelming. While it’s not an entirely new flavor combination, it works well in Florida’s heat.

Neither of us cares for the texture of popping boba pearls, and we found ourselves. Fortunately, they’re easy enough to avoid, though they do provide a nice green apple flavor. This is a fun and refreshing float that feels appropriately themed to Buzz Lightyear and the Green Aliens.

Final thoughts

Between the two, we’d order the Space Ranger Float again without hesitation. The Zurg Overload Shake is fun for photos and those who have a craving for sweet desserts, but it’s probably best shared.

As Buzz would say, the Space Ranger Float goes “to infinity and beyond,” while the Zurg shake may send your sugar levels there first.
