“Supergirl” review: DC’s cosmic adventure feels like the franchise’s answer to “Guardians of the Galaxy”

After helping launch the new DC Universe with “Superman,” director James Gunn and DC Studios expand their cosmic storytelling with “Supergirl.” The film gives Kara Zor-El her own spotlight, delivering a space-faring revenge story packed with action, heart, and some familiar sci-fi vibes that fans of Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” may recognize.

Movie review of supergirl for DC fans

Supergirl is a fantastic continuation of the new DC Cinematic Universe. It’s a great follow up to Superman that fleshes out Kara (Supergirl), telling her side of the Krypton story while also expanding the new lore.

While celebrating her birthday on a “bar-crawl” across “red sun” planets (planets where kryptonians are just like everyone else, with no powers), Supergirl finds herself in the middle of a young girl’s quest for revenge against the space pirates that killed her family.

A cosmic adventure with Guardians of the Galaxy energy

I couldn’t help but draw major similarities to the Guardians of the Galaxy films, in visuals, tone, and even in the movie’s themes of loss and to some extent, found family.

I know the story is adapted from the “Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow” comic, but it brings out the similarities in other ways. For example, while we saw some action sequences set to fun music in the most recent Superman, when it’s against a bunch of space pirates and in gritty Sci-fi cities and on spaceships, it’s practically identical to Guardians.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I love a space western, but it’s worth noting this film’s worlds have a lot in common with the worlds we’ve seen in the MCU, design-wise. If you like those films, you’ll love this one too. James Gunn wrote and directed “Superman” and serves as co-head of DC Studios, but he did not direct “Supergirl.” He was involved as a producer and as one of the architects of the new DC Universe. So in essence, “Supergirl” is a fantastic superhero film cut of the same cloth.

With strong protagonists and a solid drive behind them, Supergirl is just as great a film as Superman. I hope that the DCCU continues in this direction.

Milly Alcock shines as Kara Zor-El’s story takes center stage

Milly Alcock is a fantastic Kara, it’s great to see David Corenswet back as Clark, and Jason Momoa does a fantastic job in his new role as Lobo. The film’s story concluded well, and definitely made me look forward to seeing more of these characters, hopefully in the near future.

“Supergirl” releases in theaters everywhere June 26, 2026 and is rated PG-13, primarily for violence and language, but there’s also some pretty prominent tobacco use. There are no end-credit scenes to wait around for.

Don’t forget you can grab Supergirl collectibles and a Krypto bucket at KFC locations.

In The Parks

You can meet Supergirl at many of the Six Flags named parks. You can also meet Superman, and maybe Supergirl, at many of the Gaylord Hotels this summer, including Gaylord Palms in Orlando. You can also find her at the Warner Bros parks in Australia and Abu Dhabi.
