UNIQLO announces Disney T-shirt design competition winners
Global apparel retailer UNIQLO has announced the launch of the UTGP 2023: Magic for All collection featuring the Disney t-shirt design winners from their UT Grand Prix 2023 competition.
The special UTGP 2023: Magic for All collection celebrating Disney’s 100th anniversary will launch on May 22, 2023, and presents familiar Disney characters creatively illustrated by artists with diverse abilities.
The UT Grand Prix
According to a statement from UNIQLO, the UT Grand Prix design competition was launched in 2005 to “foster creativity and talent, using T-shirts as a canvas to freely express ideas with graphics and messages.”
The contest is open to imaginative people worldwide, regardless of age, gender, or nationality. Previous competitions have featured themes like Marvel, Nintendo, and Pokémon.
UTGP 2023 Winning Disney T-Shirt Designs
The 13 Disney t-shirt design winners were selected from more than 10,000 entries with themes of Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars. All the winning designs spotlight characters in original creations and are only available in this collection.
The work selected for the Grand Prize is a dynamic pen drawing by Hiroyuki Morita of Wolverine from Marvel’s X-Men. Other winning entries include a design by Jim Chen-Hsiang Hu depicting a Star Wars storm trooper taking a break, a design by Psychkennedy featuring Flash the sloth from “Zootopia’s” Department of Mammal Vehicles (DMV), and a design by Cheng Lu Yi with Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear from “Toy Story 3” in a style resembling a nutritional information label.
“I tried to express my interpretation of the character in a straightforward way, penciling it with high energy that is my distinctive style,” said Grand Prize Winner Hiroyuki Morita. “It thrills me to think that a lot of people will see and wear my artwork on a T-shirt.”
An award ceremony will be held in early May at The Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, Calif. During their visit, winners will experience a special studio tour.
UTGP2023: Magic for All Collection
The UTGP2023: Magic for All collection featuring the winning Disney t-shirt designs includes men’s t-shirts (5 styles), women’s t-shirts (4 styles), and kids’ t-shirts (6 styles).
The price is ¥1,500 (about $12) for adult sizes and ¥900 (about $7) for kids’ sizes. The collection is available in all UNIQLO stores in Japan and the UNIQLO online store.
