Kentucky Kingdom is preparing to open the world’s largest indoor wooden roller coaster in spring 2027, marking the latest milestone in Herschend’s nearly $50 million transformation of the Louisville theme park.

Named Midnight Showdown, the new family-friendly coaster will bring Kentucky’s horse-racing heritage indoors with wooden track, immersive projections, lighting and sound effects. It follows the opening of Flying Fox in May 2026, giving Kentucky Kingdom two new roller coasters in consecutive years.

Midnight Showdown: World’s largest indoor wooden roller coaster

Kentucky Kingdom’s seventh roller coaster will be the centerpiece of Bluegrass Downs, one of two newly themed lands debuting in 2027. Manufactured by The Gravity Group of Cincinnati, Midnight Showdown will feature 1,130 feet of wooden track, reach more than three stories tall and operate two trains seating 10 riders each.

The indoor attraction will recreate the excitement of a Kentucky horse race, complete with the sounds of pounding hooves, projected animation and a race announcer calling, “And they’re off!”

The coaster is designed as a family-friendly experience, with a planned minimum rider height of 40 inches.

Kentucky Kingdom’s nearly $50 million transformation

When guests enter Kentucky Kingdom on Opening Day 2027, they’ll discover a transformed theme park featuring the Midnight Showdown coaster and two new lands: Bluegrass Downs and Happy Valley Farm.

“We’ve been building toward this for years, and 2027 is the moment guests will see just how far Kentucky Kingdom has come,” said Carly Uglow, Director of Sales and Marketing at Kentucky Kingdom.

“From two brand-new roller coasters and reimagined lands to refreshed rides and new theming throughout the park, this is a very different Kentucky Kingdom than guests may remember from years past.

We encourage everyone to come out and visit the all-new Kentucky Kingdom.”

Since acquiring the park in 2021, Herschend has invested nearly $50 million in its biggest transformation yet, reimagining rides and attractions, adding immersive theming, and refreshing guest areas throughout the park.

Bluegrass Downs

Bluegrass Downs is meant to bring families into the excitement of race day, with a vibrant world celebrating horses and Kentucky traditions. Here, there will be rides and shows filled with discovery and fun.

Five existing Kentucky Kingdom rides are being renamed and rethemed as part of the new Bluegrass Downs land:

  • Jolly Juleps (formerly Mad Hatter): A spinning teacup ride themed to Kentucky’s signature mint julep.
  • My Old Kentucky Carousel (formerly Musical Carousel): A carousel featuring musical instruments instead of traditional horses.
  • Soaring Silks (formerly Zeppelin): A rotating balloon ride celebrating colorful jockey silks.
  • Whirlwind (formerly Scream Extreme): A spinning thrill ride named after a legendary racehorse.
  • Bumper Derby (formerly Bumper Cars): A horse-racing-inspired makeover of the park’s bumper cars.

Happy Valley Farm

Another new themed land, Happy Valley Farm, will open in spring 2027 with eight reimagined family rides, including Friendly Frogs, Loopy Lambs and Country Cruisers. The farm-inspired setting will feature a central barn, bluegrass music and playful agricultural theming.

The land will also incorporate Flying Fox, Kentucky Kingdom’s $14 million suspended family coaster that opened in May 2026, featuring a flight over Kentucky farmland and a plunge through an underground tunnel.

The Kentucky-inspired additions reflect a broader creative philosophy at Herschend. In a previous interview with Attractions Magazine about Silver Dollar City’s Miner’s Mountain Express, Herschend Chief Creative Officer Merrill Puckett Miller discussed the importance of grounding attractions in local history, culture and storytelling.

With Midnight Showdown leading the charge, Kentucky Kingdom is entering the home stretch of its five-year transformation, bringing new thrills and a renewed sense of Kentucky pride to the park in 2027.
