Six Flags’ mysterious new ‘purple’ coaster now has a charitable mission tied to it

What started as a mysterious codename for Six Flags Great Adventure’s massive 2027 roller coaster project is now becoming one of the park’s most ambitious transformations in years and a new, meaningful partnership.

On May 15, the park announced a partnership with Project Purple, a nonprofit focused on pancreatic cancer awareness, research, and patient support. The collaboration connects the upcoming coaster project with fundraising and awareness efforts through the ride’s planned 2027 debut.

The announcement also included another major tease for coaster fans: Six Flags again described the attraction as “one of the tallest coasters in the world” and a “record-breaking multi-launch experience.”

More than just a new roller coaster

While Six Flags has not officially revealed the ride’s manufacturer, layout, or final name, construction has already become highly visible near the park’s Boardwalk area. Fans have increasingly speculated that the project is tied to the former Kingda Ka area, especially after the legendary coaster closed in 2025.

Instead of occupying only Kingda Ka’s exact footprint, Project Purple appears to stretch across a broader section of the park that may include:

  • former Kingda Ka infrastructure areas
  • land near Green Lantern
  • backstage expansion space
  • portions of the park’s redeveloped Shoreline Pier district

A new era for Six Flags Great Adventure

The “multi-launch” description is sure to catch coaster enthusiasts’ attention.

Kingda Ka became famous for its single explosive hydraulic launch and towering top hat, representing the height of the early-2000s coaster wars era. Modern multi-launch coasters typically focus on longer ride experiences, multiple acceleration moments, and more complex layouts.

The park is also starting public marketing for the project, with construction already visible and the “Project Purple” branding now tied directly to a year-long charitable campaign.

“This partnership is especially meaningful to me personally, having lost my father to pancreatic cancer,” said park president Mike Fehnel in the announcement.

Guests will begin seeing Project Purple signage and QR codes throughout the park, with additional fundraising initiatives and special events planned through the coaster’s opening in 2027.

Whatever rises over the Six Flags Great Adventure skyline next will not be a small addition.
